Behind Vancouver Is Awesome’s print magazine – spread #11

December 29, 2010

By now I hope you’ve either picked up a printed copy of the joint issue of the magazine that we did with Discorder from one of the many LOCATIONS that stock it or you’ve DOWNLOADED the PDF from us for FREE. Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to bring you an inside look behind each and every spread.

Eleventh up is a spread containing our Most Awesome interview with Mayor Gregor Robertson. It took us months to lock this one down and it finally came together when we were right down to the wire of our deadline. We had THIS Cory Monteith interview in the bag and would have posted it in this print issue if our appointment to interview the mayor had fallen through… and we’re REALLY glad it didn’t because the interview turned out great if I do say so.

Buh Bye, 2010! V.I.A. editors’ favourite blog posts – Robert White

December 29, 2010

“My favourite post was for sure the write-up on Bob Rennie. He’s such a fascinating guy, with a big reputation in the city… but a big heart for the city as well. It was awesome reading about his art acquisitions (I totally love seeing Creed’s neon every time I train past) and enthusiasm for the bourgeoning local culture. Such a swell fellow, and inspiring post!”

Buh Bye, 2010! V.I.A. editors’ favourite blog posts – Jef Choy

December 28, 2010

“Unplugged #10 – Elfin Lakes
Michael’s posts are a great reference point for me when I’m too lazy to go across town to shoot a photo of weird shaped tree, he took it up a notch in this one. Look how stoic he looks in that one photo with the poles.

All the dogtown posts.
I know more than a few people that only look at the dog posts….I’ll ask them, ‘hey did you see my post?’…’unless there was a dog in it…..no.’

Michael J. Fox Most Awesome interview
Self explanatory….

Dano’s introductory Flickr Pickr
In the world of snowboarding Dano is a national treasure… he picked photos for us and this was first day on the job.”

Feels Like Home Episode 6 – Home to America

December 28, 2010

Feels Like Home is a monthly radio show (and podcast) produced and hosted by Lizzy Karp and Amanda McCuaig. It’s created and aired on CJSF Radio, Simon Fraser University’s campus/community radio station located in Burnaby/Vancouver, and in it they share stories of home centered around specific themes, mixed with great Canadian music.

Vancouver is Awesome is the official media sponsor of Feels Like Home and will be sharing each and every episode with you in case you miss them when they air!

When we knew that we would both be going home ourselves this past November, we took our recording gear with us. The result is two short documentaries about going home, and an interview with the lovely Hilary Henegar, editor of Granville Magazine, who also went to visit her home state of Indiana during this time.

This episode starts off with a story of my trip home to Kellogg for a funeral, the reunion of family, and a couple stories from my Grandfather.

Then we chat with Hilary about what it’s like to be back in snowy hilly Indiana.

And end with Lizzy’s hilarious and awesome family together in Salt Lake City and their series of traditions. (“I want some cornbread!!”)

In this episode we play the following warm fuzzy music:

Let’s Stay Inside by Adaline & Frederick
Little Girl by United Steel Workers of Montreal
Green Trees Red Hearts by Nat Jay
Piano for Open Skies by Stefan Christoff (under Hilary’s interview)

Catch us on CJSF the fourth Thursday of every month at 9am!

VIA CHRISTMAS CAKE DRIVE……

December 28, 2010

Hello, I am Baby Santa Claus. I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed the donor drive. The donations are an integral part of VIA, and seeing everyone help in any way possible, has been uplifting to my otherwise sad life. Nothing beats seeing people give during the holiday season, which is why I am now reaching out to you, I Baby Santa Claus need your help.

See, after not getting the Package Shark for the ninth Christmas in a row, the introduction of a bright green McNugget sauce, and worst of all, the success of the donor drive has been a glaring reminder of his failed Christmas Cake rescue program of ’08, leaving Mr. Choy in a very erratic state. His constant doomsday descriptions of a world without Christmas Cake are grossly embellished, but given the horrible taste of such a cake, in some ways, very possible.

The dipping sauce is for a limited time only, the only time he gets packages is at Christmas, so the Package Shark will soon be forgotten, but It is the possibility of Mr. Choy going a year without Christmas cake which may be the most scarring.

At times Mr. Choy’s intentions may be misguided, but at least this time, for my sake, if you have any Christmas cake to spare, it would be greatly appreciated. He will accept, both light and dark, with or without icing.

Buh Bye, 2010! V.I.A. editors’ favourite blog posts – Frank Daniello

December 28, 2010

“Growing up reading Concrete Powder is when I first became familiar with Dano Pendygrasse’s snowboard photography (he was a regular contributor from ’91 to ’03). After becoming one of the magazine’s editors, I had a chance to help revisit and pay homage to Dano and his early work for Concrete’s retrospective 100th issue in 2009. Therefore, my Best Of 2010 choice isn’t a singular post. It’s 103 of them [click to view], which represent Dano’s run as V.I.A.’s Daily Flickr Pickr. He’s got a good eye…”

Daily Flickr Pickr – Day 356

December 28, 2010

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!).

I wanted to share with you today a photograph submitted by [travelfox] titled Lights of Hope, featuring the display of Christmas lights at St. Paul’s Hospital. When St. Paul’s was first opened in 1894, it was the southern-most building on Burrard Street and the second hospital to open in the young city, after Vancouver General Hospital (which was a one-storey building on Pender – their original nine-bed tent was lost during the fire of 1886). Today St. Paul’s is the last hospital on the downtown peninsula, and creates the yearly display of lights to encourage donations to fund its operations.

Take a close look at the ghostly figures in the lower-right corner; they are reminiscent of the ones in this photo that we looked at last week, although a result of different techniques. Cool and creepy.

Behind Vancouver Is Awesome’s print magazine – spread #10

December 28, 2010

Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to bring you an inside look behind each and every spread.

Tenth up is a spread containing another PROOF feature profiling a creative’s life and work on the left. This one we’re quite proud of as it was put together by Ken Lum, the artist who designed the EAST VAN CROSS. Also welling up with pride due to the right hand side of the spread containing a piece written by comedian and comedy organizer, Graham Clark, about the comedy scene in Vancouver, past and present. This is one of my personal favourite spreads in our first printed issue.
