The Proof - Andrea Rokosz

Andrea's dedication is shown in the roughness of her hands: she has sacrificed their softness to form silver, stone and crystal into art, offering them up to make others beautiful.

Andrea's dedication is shown in the roughness of her hands: she has sacrificed their softness to form silver, stone and crystal into art, offering them up to make others beautiful. Infused throughout her work are skulls and bones that suggest to us our own mortality and how life can be enjoyed in simple pleasures, from a stubbed cigarette to a twisted arrow. She manages to translate her playfulness and insight into a poetic depth that can be wrapped around a finger, a neck, or a wrist, taking what is fragile and transforming it to the enduring. Her work serves to remind us that amidst the chaos of our days, quietude can be found in a ring, and beauty in a mirror.

Andrea Rokosz Proof

The Proof

01 I love the view from my apartment - sometimes I get to see some really interesting things from my balcony...especially in the alley below me.

02 The one thing I really miss living in an apartment is having outdoor space, I grew up with a big backyard and parents who groomed the landscape beautifully. My mom helped me find some plants that she thought I would be able to keep alive on my little balcony...as of now these are the soul survivors

03 My studio is my home away from home, I spend a lot of days and late nights there working, creating and feeling really lucky that I can do what I do. Plus, it is located right across the street from my boyfriend's work, so we get to have our lunch breaks together all the time!

04 I cast my own work in my studio, it is one of my favorite aspects of what I do.

05 This is a sample of some of my work!

06 I have always been a collector and I love displaying things. Around my house and studio I have clusters of objects I have been given, or found, or made, that I have grouped into categories that sometimes only make sense to me.

07 Maybe it's because I work mostly in 3 dimensional objects but I am always amazed by people who can draw. This is a sketch my sister Meredith did that I convinced her to pull out of her sketch book so I could put on my wall.

08 A few days every week I commute to the suburbs to work for another jeweller. Sometimes I get the most epic sunrises as I cruise along the highway in the morning.

The Questions

What neighbourhood do you live in?

Gastown...I've lived in a lot of areas of Vancouver over the years, but I had no idea how convenient life could be until I moved to Gastown.

What do you do and where?

I am a jewelry designer and metalsmith working out of my studio in Vancouver. I hand carve, cast and fabricate a line called Army Of Rokosz Jewelry and I also get to do some really awesome custom pieces for some really awesome people.

What are you working on?

Right now I am finishing up a new collection of pieces for Army Of Rokosz which will be debuting for Summer 2011 and I am collaborating on a project with my brother and sister that I am pretty excited about...so stay tuned.
