The Opening – Hello!

THE OPENING is all about introducing the fascinating, quirky and wonderful people working in and around the visual arts in Vancouver.

THE OPENING is all about introducing the fascinating, quirky and wonderful people working in and around the visual arts in Vancouver. Each week, we'll feature an artist, collective, curator or administrator to delve deep into who and what makes art happen!

Hello! I suppose I may as well start by introducing myself. I’m Anne Cottingham, and I’m here to tell you about the people who make up Vancouver’s visual arts scene.

My background is in history (of art and more) and photography. I like colour – Roy Lichtenstein, Yves Klein, William Eggleston, Richard Jackson; I like sass – Tracey Emin, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Gilbert & George, Tichy; and I like class – Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Rachel Whiteread. I work in contemporary art here in Vancouver, which is different everyday and keeps me on my toes. Outside of my art-filled life, I’m learning to cook because I like good food too much not to do so. The cooking is somewhat inspired by watching a lot of Food Network, which forced me to cancel my cable because I have little will power to turn away, and even now I probably still watch too much TV. Mostly I just like to hang out with good people and have adventure and laughs!

Numerous Vancouverites are doing amazing things in visual arts all over the globe, and I want to highlight their effort, skill and creativity. It’s a big city, with lots of visual arts talent, but it can be a bit of a maze to navigate and figure out because it’s still a young and developing scene. So let's start to shed light on some of these people in Vancouver and for Vancouver – not just artists, but curators, writers, administrators – all the people who are working hard to keep the visual arts in Vancouver relevant and interesting, whether they still live here or not.

I’m happily drawing from whom I’d like to talk to and from whom I know to start – but please don’t hesitate to send me an e-mail (theopening@vancouverisawesome.com) about someone who is doing something cool or interesting or just knows some fascinating stuff. Add me to twitter (@ViATheOpening). Pull me aside at openings and tell me I don’t know what’s happening until I talk to so and so. Anything! Nobody knows everything and I certainly don’t claim to, so let’s start learning about each other.
