March 25, 2011

Did you know that author, Vancouver Book Club alumni, Jenn Farrell, has a blog? It’s true. HERE is a post she did on it about her experience with the Club!

Also, we updated the Vancouver Book Club page with information on all five of the books we’ve recommended. As our contribution to the literary scene in this city, with each book that we recommend we bring in the author for a free chat with our members of this free club. Are you a member? Learn more HERE.

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #30

March 25, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

Back in October 2010, DC Canada’s “Pop-Up Tour” of Ontario and Quebec went down. It’s featured in the recently-released video (above) and in the Spring issue of SBC Skateboard (be sure to pick it up on newsstands). Metro Van’s Sascha Daley, Micky Papa, Ryan Oughton, Paul Trep and Chad Dickson were amongst the tour’s roster.

It appeared that Week 30 of the Ledge(r) was in fact Barrier Kult Week. Vancouver’s Most Evil masked men held a Black Mass at Leeside on March 18th to celebrate the release of their second Emerica collaborative shoe. On top of that, Emerica posted this hidden BA.KU. part that appeared in the shoe brand’s epic Stay Gold video. Last but not least, Bones Wheels posted this commercial featuring their spherical collabo with the Kult.

Vancouver’s Kyu Tae Kim has been testing out his Sony HXR-NX5U HD camera at some local parks during the Ledge(r)-approved weather that’s been happening lately. Check out this Bonsor sesh and this Plaza edit. Speaking of the Plaz, local skater/rapper Terell Safadi hooked up a familiar-sounding Vancouver Canucks tribute song and video, which was filmed at the Plaza and nearby Rogers Arena. Check out the canucks.com story.

Lets close out #30 with some Spring fun. The Krooked Krooze-In Jam & BBQ was postponed twice due to bunk weather, but it came to life on Mar.20th and was well-worth the wait:

#YVRtwestival 2011

So Twestival was light night and it was truly awesome! Make sure to read about all the different Twestivals all over the world and their global movement through local chapters. A few nights a year, there are those larger, special events, tweetups, and meetups where many (if not all) the world of local Twitter folks gather to socialize over a singular cause mixing social media veterans and newbies alike. Full disclosure: V.I.A. was one of the sponsors and organizers for the event.

YVR Twestival 2011 | Vancouver Lookout

The view from atop the Lookout was amazing. You could see the entire city, walking around in circles, mingling about the tower.

UNPLUGGED #14: Sailing Howe Sound – Snowflake Series

March 25, 2011
PLACE: Eagle Harbour Yacht Club (Click for Map)

LOCATION: West Vancouver, B.C.

In my experience, there is no activity that better exemplifies the UNPLUGGED mindset than sailing. There is something Zen about moving swiftly across the waves powered solely by harnessing the wind, the only sound being that of the waves lapping against the hull and the rustling of the wind in the sails. It was this endorphin inducing rush that prompted me to seek my ASA Basic Keelboat certification in 1997. After completing this exam barely a week went by where I could not be found down at LSA on Lake Lanier North of Atlanta, Georgia learning, sailing and generally having fun.

Sadly, in 1999 I moved to Pittsburgh which is land-locked (unless you count the rivers) and my sailing life was put on hold. That is until moving to Vancouver in 2008.

The calm, protected waters of The Straight of Georgia offer a unique salt-water sailing experience that I have been patiently waiting to take advantage of for three long years. Luckily, one of my co-workers is a sailor and graciously invited me to crew along side him and several others in the final race of the 2010-2011 Snowflake Series out of Eagle Harbour Yacht Club in West Van.

Preparing for the Race

Our vessel was the 30′ Olson 911 named Nunnehi pictured above being prepped for launch by father and son combo Norm and Eric Wiederick.

V.I.A. Weekly Nardwuar – Week 30
Nardwuar vs. Odd Future

March 25, 2011

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. One of the groups I talked to was Odd Future, from Los Angeles California! I knew they liked skateboarding so it was natural that I present them with a Vancouver Classic, the Skull Skates Cap! Doot doola doot doo … doot doo!

Nardwuar vs. Odd Future

Stay tuned for another interview next week and if you can’t wait then head over to NARDWUAR.COM, FACEBOOK.COM/NARDWUAR or TWITTER.COM/NARDWUAR!

Health Nutz on APTN

March 25, 2011

Based in North Van, Health Nutz is a new comedy airing on APTN that’s kinda like Trailer Park Boys meets Corner Gas meets the North Shore. It premiers this Tuesday, March 29th so if you like what you see in this trailer, tune in!

The official word on the show:
Buzz Riel Jr. is forced to retire at the age of twenty-two as a professional hockey league player due to an accidental career ending injury. Over a decade later, after squandering his insurance money away, a jobless, alcoholic gambler Buzz Jr. discovers he has inherited everything his estranged father owned – on the condition that he gets and stays sober. His father, Buzz Sr. has a lot of prized possessions, such as the successful Health Nutz Juice Bar; he also holds the patent to a lucrative energy drink, Buzz Berry Juice. Buzz Jr. would have to run a business he knows nothing about, surrounded by his father’s health nut friends, Native community members and eccentric customers who all like to hang out at the Health Nutz Juice Bar. It’s a place with and atmosphere of the show Cheers except with wheatgrass instead of beers. (English)

Music BC’s Career Development Series:
TURNING FRIENDS INTO FANS

March 25, 2011

Our friends at Music BC are launching a Career Development Series for bands and music industry folks! The first one is:

TURNING FRIENDS INTO FANS:

USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO MARKET YOUR BAND

A couple days ago I re-introduced you to Dave Olson who will be speaking, today I’d like to re-introduce you to another one of the speakers, Rebecca Bolwitt, who should need no introduction.

Otherwise known as @Miss604, she’s been on Twitter since early 2007 and I would be VERY surprised if you’re not familiar with her because not only does she have almost twice as many Twitter followers as the mayor but she’s also been running her fantastic Miss604.com blog since 2004. She also runs a WordPress development/new media consulting firm called sixty4media, was recently listed as one of the most influential women in social media in all of Canada and she also recently co-authored the book Blogging to Drive Business. In short: she has a lot to teach you this weekend, so you should go to this!
