Daily Flickr Pickr Day 467

POSTED April 23, 2011 BY Gary Hubbs
Tweet

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!).

Some pretty decent weather in Vancouver the last couple of days, and with it some really incredible light. Photographically speaking, these are exciting times indeed – I know I was getting a little tired of shooting nothing but night shots. But getting back to the topic at hand: that light. Victoria Ronco made excellent use of it recently in New Westminster, using it to carve out and reveal the rich texture in the Front Street side of the Dupont Block (642 Columbia Street). That’s a 112 year old wall, almost an archaeological study of brick and paint. Victoria has titled it Illusion Walls.

Kind of looks like the light that Edward Hopper liked too.

Gary, thanks so much for featuring my shot of that wall in New West, and even more so for the history behind it. I was driving down that road and actually shouted “STOP!” to the driver, got out, and started taking pictures of the bright coloured walls. This shot seemed like an optical illusion, the way I framed the shot, to me at least, made it hard to see if it was a corner protruding outwards or caving inwards.

    Anyways, thanks again :)

    My pleasure Victoria!

Because of the ‘illusion’ reference in your title I had to find the building on satellite maps to make sure you didn’t fool me by ‘constructing’ this in photoshop – and that’s when I learned about the Dupont Block and it’s history.

I’m glad you had the driver stop the car, the angle of light is amazing and I’m sure, fleeting.

Thanks for contributing to the pool!
