The monthly, V.I.A. co-sponsored variety show, Paul Anthony’s Talent TIme, is only one week away! Here’s a little video to prime you on the comedic awesomeness of the one and only Andrew Barber who will be on the show…

Full details are below. HERE is the Facebook event page with more deets. RSVP!

******

Vancouver’s favourite (and only) televised variety show is back with an experimental episode paying homage to Glenn O’Brien’s TV PARTY! TV PARTY was a cable access show in NYC from 1978-1982. It was created by the new wave artists of the time as a reaction to the mainstream junk. We are not trying to recreate what they did. In this day and age I’m not sure that would work. We are planning the same kind of TALENT TIME program you know and love, just using TV PARTY as inspiration for a slightly more experimental delivery.

FEATURING:

- Guest host HUGH PHUKOVSKY!!
The long-absent punk rock custodian of comedy returns to the stage to entertain and confuse. Although he has only performed 3 times in the last 5 years, in his height, Hugh played all over the world, from booze cans in New York, church basements in San Francisco and on top of billboards during rush hour in Vancouver. He has appeared on Much Music’s Video On Trial as well as the Vicki Gabereau show and has opened numerous times for both Neil Hamburger & Zach Galifianakis.

The last time Hugh guest hosted Talent Time:

The first Vancouver special to go up in over 25 years!

April 27, 2011

Big thanks to everybody who came out to the launch of our Vancouver Special Playhouse this past weekend! Below is a photo of it in it’s almost-finished stage, it now has some flower boxes, kittens out front and more and is sitting in the front yard of a house in Mount Pleasant.

We’ll be sharing more photos of it soon, for now click to check out the articles in the Vancouver Metro and the Vancouver Sun as well as the radio feature that Margaret Gallagher did on it for The Early Edition on CBC (it’s at the 1:30:10 mark)!

Also, big thanks to Anne at the store, Vancouver Special at 3612 Main Street, for hosting us and helping us throw the release party!

Van City Kitty: Meet Sage & Peanut

April 27, 2011

A new kitty twice a week! Yup, we want YOUR cat photos and stories! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

A two-for-one special featuring two very different gentleman. Submitted by VIA reader Quinton Molyneaux, meet Sage and Peanut:

Name: Sage and Peanut
Nicknames: Most commonly “Hooch” & “Psnuderson”
Breed/Colouring: Sage is a Salt Spring wild tabby who came to me when he was fighting too much with my friend’s Mom’s Pomeranian. Peanut is the son of my friend’s cat, Ninja who has birthed/grandma’d many of the cats in my family of friends. He’s black (w/brown lines in the sun)
Hood: East Van
Habits: Sage is basically a Frat Boy. If he were a human he would drink beer from a hat and hold your legs while you do a keg stand, but you should probably get a spotter in on that since he is easily distracted and may drop you. His hobbies include rolling his R’s, talking to himself whilst awake or in his sleep, hugging, slobbering and eating delicious things like ribbons and silk flowers. Peanut is his BFF opposite and is a distinguished gentleman. If he were a human he would have a tweed jacket with elbow patches and drink cognac from snifters. Peanut just wants some peace and quiet but occasionally enjoys boxing and studying Sage’s strange habits.
Hangouts: Sage likes to stare out windows then run to different windows and stare out of those ones for a while, then switch, loudly! Peanut wants to sit anywhere warm, that he won’t have to move for a long time. Paper makes everything better. Please do not disturb him with your movement and chatter (unless it’s for hugs and treats and even then just please be quiet and still while you feed and hug him. Please. *deepsigh*.)
Other info: Alternately referred to as Manic and Depressive or, in Korean, Ppalli Wah (Hurry!) and Cheoncheonhi (Slowly). They both enjoy synchronized sitting in various cat formations.

Are you looking for a (or another) little furry beast to love? Please check out Happy Tails, our weekly segment featuring the BC SPCA and one of the animals they currently have available for adoption. (You may have noticed that many of the Van City Kitties came from the SPCA!) Check back every Saturday for a new Happy Tails segment!

And if you adopted your pet from the SPCA and would like to share your awesome story on Happy Tails, send an email to vancitykitty@vancouverisawesome.com or Rory.Blanchard@novusnow.ca.

Giants of The Forest – The Never Surprise

April 27, 2011
As promised, we’re pleased to present Episode Seven of Giants Of The Forest, featuring the talented, and hilarious men called The Never Surprise, accompanied by the also talented and hilarious, Robbie Driscoll. It was a crisp afternoon outdoors, and there was an unnecessary number of mosquitos, but those elements were overshadowed by the beautiful eagles overhead, sunbeams cutting through the ceiling of the forest, and how much these guys made us laugh in-between filming. So grab a warm cup of coffee or tea, and enjoy The Never Surprise performing their song “The Old New Game” in the beautiful sunshine-y woods of Delta. Listen to some more of their sweet tunes at their bandcamp page here. Then mark your calendar for May 5th because they’re having their CD release party at the Railway Club. Click here for the facebook event.

Filmed with a Canon 5D Mark II

Dogtown Vancouver: Scout

April 27, 2011

It’s a new dog twice a week! Click here to find out how to get your dog posted if you haven’t sent in your photos yet!

Today’s dog featured in Dogtown Vancouver is Scout, Bree T’s pup. Here’s what she had to say about her…

NAME: Scout.
BREED: Border Collie/Blue Heeler.
HOOD: Pemberton.
FAVOURITE SNACK: Steak night!
OTHER INFO: Scout’s goes to work every day to dad’s construction site where she keeps the squirrels in line. Her favourite things to do are to go mountain biking, swim in One-Mile Lake and cross country ski with mom. She misses her brother Ranger who now lives in Ottawa (shown in first photo). Scout has a nightly “10 O’Clock freakout” in which she tosses all her bedding around and gruffs and talks to the cat Moto. She is eager to please and such a great sidekick!

If you’re interested in adopting a pet, check out our Happy Tails feature. If you adopted your pet from the SPCA and would like to share your awesome story on Happy Tails, send an email to Rory.Blanchard@novusnow.ca.
