The Pop In! Volume Three- (Carley Mulvenna)

We're knocking on doors and taking a look around peoples' homes to see where your neighbours relax, hang out with their pets, and create! It's an invitation to snoop, but we're staying away from their medicine cabinets.

Our Host: Carley Mulvenna

Who's that? Your friendly Air Canada flight attendant...coffee, tea or me?

Beverage Offered: latte!

Carley, where do you live?

I live in the Cambie Village.  I live in a one bedroom apartment from the 1940s.

What do you use your place for mostly?

I like to entertain from time to time, and I relax here.

How would you describe your place?

It’s very white and breezy. I have a few plants, the ones that have survived, and some sparse furniture.

What do you like about not having a lot of furniture?

Space to move around. There’s something really calming about not having to walk around your sofa to get to your coffee table, to get your chair, to get to your lamp, to turn it on

What are those big glass balls?

They came from my grandparents and I think that my grandfather found them. He was a fisherman. He found them off the west coast of Van Island I believe, on a beach.  They’re Japanese fishing floats so there would have been a rope netting over them, and would have been used to keep the nets floating.

Tell me about your workspace

It usually starts off being very uncluttered and just he bare essentials and then over a week is get covered in mail, pens, whatever…scraps of paper, glasses

What do you do on a Thursday evening that you’re home?

You might find me watching a movie, on my lovely big computer. It was a concious decision not to have a TV and instead having a really nice computer monitor so that I can watch whatever.

Do you change it around a lot here?

I do enjoy moving around my furniture actually, just things get stale if you don’t move your furniture around

Is there anything you don’t like about your apartment?

The kitchen is a little too small. I’d like kitchen that could fit 2 people in it and other things like dishwashers and other luxuries like that would be nice. I don’t have a lot of complaints actually. I like the layout. And the light’s nice.

It’s interesting that in an apartment that you have a front hall. Do you like it?

I kind of like it because I think it’s nice to come into a place and not see the whole place as you come in. You have a little welcoming area and it leads you on to the rest of the space.

What do you think of the hallway?

I have a weird hallway to nowhere and that’s probably just a design feature of building. It needed to be here I think. It’s my library.

If this wasn’t a rental, what would you do to it?

I think I would tear out a wall here to make the kitchen bigger!

And then bring the kitchen into the dining area.
