I'm going to use my very first selection as Unplugged's Flickr Pick Picker to introduce myself (I promise not to turn this post into a weekly personal diatribe but I do want to tell you why I took this job). I am a Vancouverite, born and bred...and moved away and returned. I spent the last ten years of life in Scotland, mainly in Edinburgh, where I earned my photography degree, worked and lived and met my fiance. Last year he and I decided to try out life in Vancouver and I am now the proud sponsor of a fully fledged permanent resident.

I truly believe that the word awesome is vastly overused. The stroganoff I had for dinner tonight was beautifully seasoned and remarkably tasty. Awesome? No. Making it up that massive (well, I thought it was!) hill at the end of my cycle home from work was really rather surprising. Awesome? Nope. Awesome should be reserved for things that give you goosebumps and heartswells, things like that silence you only get when you are completely alone in the woods or being the first to walk around in a fresh snowfall or well, Vancouver.

This place is awesome. Ever since I came home nearly a year ago I've been stumbling around in awe. I'm in awe of the fact that if I can tear my eyes away from the huge obvious beauty of the mountains and sky and water and trees I can see just as much of a spectacle in the tiny little details everywhere around me. I'm in awe of the communtities and cultures that I'm getting to know again and that I'm learning about for the first time. I'm in love.

As soon as I saw it I realised that Pamela De Mark's Cove at English Bay is the image that I had held in my mind all of the years that I was away. I hadn't realised that I missed this scene until I came back and saw that it was still here. This is the glimpse of nature that you get through the buildings when you're moving through the city, little flashes to remind you of what makes this place so awesome. Thanks for this one Pamela, there's a really beautiful light in this image and I love that you've used super-modern technology to take us back all those years.

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to the Pool and for tolerating me waxing lyrical about our lovely home. Keep the photos coming, I love looking at picutres and I want to see as many as possible! Keep an eye on @VIAUnplugged and @VIAwesome for goings on and updates. Thanks for reading. Susan.

If you'd like to see your outdoor photos featured at VIA, submit them to our V.I.A. UNPLUGGED Flickr pool.

UNPLUGGED is a state of mind.

It’s that point in your consciousness where you can feel at one with nature, escaping the trappings of the day-to-day to an almost dream-like place where nothing else seems to exist besides you and your natural surroundings. It is our opinion here at VIA that Vancouver holds a unique place in the civilized world in that reaching this state often requires no more effort than simply pulling off to the side of the road, pocketing your keys and taking a few steps into the forest
