If you've ever tried to articulate in words what makes an interesting photo for you as a viewer, it's a fairly challenging exercise. Further, if you were to compile such a list on paper, you might find that there are contradictions throughout - and no two people will have the exact same list. Heck, one person might have a completely different list from day to day!

These are some of the thoughts that were swirling through my brain as I spent time with the photograph below by Jan Gates. What is it that makes this image compelling to me? I'm not usually a person who is drawn to finding a particular 'mood' in a photograph, but this image clearly conveys a mood. I think it can be described in one word - mysteriousness. The dark lighting, the sparse composition, the shadowy bits at the bottom; it all works to create a spooky and mysterious image, and one that demands me to look closer. In her comments beneath the photo Jan mentions that this was the result of experiments with a new camera at night, and I would like to think that results like this would result in further experimentation.

Here is -23.
