Crowdsourced Sunday Volume Fourteen

August 28, 2011

Welcome to Crowdsourced Sunday, a curated batch of photos from our Twitter followers.

After a bit of a hiatus, we’re back asking people of Vancouver to share the fun that they got up to over the weekend with us. This is how it rolls: Saturdays we send out some tweets from our @VIAwesome account, asking our followers to tweet us photos of what they got into during the day. We gather everything up into this blog post to share with you. Check out the great pics below and thanks to everyone for sharing!

UNPLUGGED Flickr Pickr: Snowfield to Summit

August 27, 2011
LOCATION: Golden Ears
(Click for map)

I reckon that this is the single most Canadian image I’ve ever seen…sun, snow, mountains, shorts, big sky and hiking, all in one place. And in August! Congratulations to Nathaniel and his hiking partner for making it up and back down The Golden Ears in the same day, that’s some feat. Also, congratulations for this stunning image. And congratulations to all of us for having this amount of awesome right on our doorstep…

There was a lot of amazing photography in the pool this week folks, please keep posting and spreading the word about the Unplugged Flickr Pickr.

Snow field to summit.

It’s that point in your consciousness where you can feel at one with nature, escaping the trappings of the day-to-day to an almost dream-like place where nothing else seems to exist besides you and your natural surroundings. It is our opinion here at VIA that Vancouver holds a unique place in the civilized world in that reaching this state often requires no more effort than simply pulling off to the side of the road, pocketing your keys and taking a few steps into the forest

DAILY FLICKR PICKR DAY 580

August 26, 2011

Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!)

Found a lovely photo in the pool today, yet another shot that took place on the edge of the ocean. Probably not surprising that many such photos get submitted to the Flickr group – after all, it is summer, and there is a lot of ocean around, never mind bodies of water in general.

I tried to find out the name of today’s photographer, but in the end all I could come up with is not that sure. I know it sounds like a variation of ‘Who’s on First?’, but I assure you it is not – I am confident, not that sure. From Crescent Beach, displaying a nice bit of repeated shapes, some sweet late evening light and generous widescreen proportions is Sailing.

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #52

August 26, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

Coquitlam’s Micky Papa not only has an awesome name, but he filmed his entire Mo’ Mondays part for Bones Wheels in one day at the Vancouver Plaza. Rain? It just don’t matter to Micky (hit mute and let the skating do the talking if you can’t hang with profanity-laced rap).

The 17th annual Bowl Series is wrapping up this weekend, with an event on Saturday at the Squamish park, and the finals on Sunday at the Whistler bowl (details here). Last Saturday’s contest at the Kensington bowl (well, pool) had a great turnout, and you’ll find photos and the top 3 finishers right here, as well as some video footage here. In the web interview department, there’s one featuring Stacy Gabriel in regards to his “Light Wallet Lifestyle” (complete with a raging comment-debate) right here, and another featuring the one and only Daniel “Alien” Nelson.

Vancouver’s Kitsch Skateboards teamed up with the Island’s Instrumental Skateboards squad for a little bro-down tour of Nanaimo, Courtenay and Vic from Aug.7-9; a full web feature from said excursion can be found right here. Some flawless footy of Wade Desarmo from years back is online, and Ryan Decenzo manhandled Hollywood High in this clip for Orion Trucks. East Van’s Ian Beer is an avid collector of unique cameras, and authored a feature called “The Format Sampler” for the Concrete 2011 Photo Annual. Check out the online version of the feature here, and take a look at a sample video he made for the cause using a Digital Harinezumi 1 at the Hastings bowl with Mikey Klinkhamer as the subject:

Van City Kitty: It’s Molly Waffles

August 26, 2011

A new kitty once a week! Yup, we want YOUR cat photos and stories! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

VIA reader Emily Wight submitted her rad tortoiseshell (aren’t all torties rad?!) to our series. Here are the deets on Molly Waffles:

Name: Molly Waffles
Breed/Colouring: Tortoiseshell
Hood: South Granville
Habits: Stealing sips of whatever we’re drinking out of cups, stealing bites of whatever we’re eating off of plates, napping, racing around the apartment as if being chased, and cuddling on the couch
Hangouts: Dresser drawers, couch arms, piles of warm laundry, sunny spots
Other info: Molly came from the Vancouver SPCA, and before we read the instructions on how to introduce a cat to her new home, we let her out of her carrying case and into our messy apartment. She adapted immediately, and pretty much runs the place. She likes (and is affectionate with) just about everyone, but has a soft spot for men and will hurl herself shamelessly at all male guests, demanding pets and refusing to be brushed aside, never taking “I have allergies” as an excuse.

She is awesome.

Are you looking for a (or another) little furry beast to love? Please check out Happy Tails, our weekly segment featuring the BC SPCA and one of the animals they currently have available for adoption. (You may have noticed that many of the Van City Kitties came from the SPCA!) Check back every Saturday for a new Happy Tails segment!

And if you adopted your pet from the SPCA and would like to share your awesome story on Happy Tails, send an email to Rory.Blanchard@novusnow.ca.
