Salmon Safe launches in BC

I headed down to the Main Street Farmers Market yesterday for the kickoff of a fantastic new program launched by the Pacific Salmon Foundation (the same folks who brought us the Pink Salmon Festival ) and the Fraser Basin Council.

I headed down to the Main Street Farmers Market yesterday for the kickoff of a fantastic new program launched by the Pacific Salmon Foundation (the same folks who brought us the Pink Salmon Festival) and the Fraser Basin Council. It's called Salmon Safe and it's an independent third-party certification program that helps educate land users, retailers as well as consumers about the importance of protecting healthy and functioning ecosystems and watersheds that are essential to Pacific salmon. It protects the fish! And while it's just been launched this week in BC with 22 farms there are already 300 farms in the states who are certified, covering 60,000 acres of land.

Look for the Salmon Safe logo when shopping!

When I first caught wind of Salmon Safe I was told that farms were being given this certification, and when speaking of salmon the most common thing that comes to my mind when you mix the word "farm" up in a sentence with them is fish farms, but this has nothing to do with that. It's about farmers and other land users using agricultural practices that protect Pacific salmon habitat and water quality. There's no mystery about whether or not these farms threaten our wild stocks, all of the Salmon Safe land farms being certified are absolutely leading the charge in protecting the watershed and the fish stocks that rely on it.
