WE ARE VANCVR: Zach Bulick, Designer

Vancouver is an amazing city, chock full of creative talent. WE ARE VANCVR is a simple, elegant way to showcase all that talent in one place. Every Tuesday we profile one individual from the VANCVR community. VANCVR.com is a Domain7 Labs project.

Zach Bulick just calls himself a designer—and yes, that's his day job at Vancouver's Union Gospel Mission—but this Texas native also has some serious illo and photography chops.

The honorary Canadian moved to Vancouver for university in 2004 and stuck around. We're really glad he did. We love his illustrated designs for Homelessness Action Week and his fantastic type treatments, and we also think he's a close tie for nicest guy in the city.

Bonus: after a visit to last year's SXSW in his home state, Zach also became an unwitting Instagram-celebrity—his lovely light-washed feed is pushing 40,000 followers! Read on to find out why he loves being a creative in Vancouver.

What do you do?

I'm the graphic designer for Union Gospel Mission in the DTES.

Why do you love being a creative in Vancouver?

I love the size of our city. We're big, but not too big. It's like a giant neighborhood, running into friends or someone you know in any part of the city. For creatives, in my experience, it makes the city more approachable. People who are doing amazing work in their industry aren't too busy to sit down for coffee, dialogue and share their experiences.

How would you love to collaborate with other local creatives?

I want to contribute more. So many amazing things are happening in Vancouver. Spaces like Pecha Kucha, Creative Mornings, TEDx, the Culture Crawl and a ton of others have opened up and there's more and more dialogue and group sharing in the creative community. It's really exciting! I'd like to help grow and foster more of this in the city.

How can people reach you?
