Words: Mark Busse

Sergio Toporek scares me. Seriously. He is shockingly smart, and unflinchingly committed to doing things the best way. The right way. And like many of the most talented creatives in Vancouver, he’s Mexican.

Known affectionately as "Topo" to friends, Sergio is a successful artist, designer, educator, and independent filmmaker originally from Mexico City. For years his specialty was designing music cd covers—over 80 in fact—working with popular music acts on major labels. People often describe his work as an exploration of the relationship between art, mysticism, science, and technology. He has exquisite taste and his images are truly beautiful.

These days Toporek is directing a transmedia documentary titled Beware of Images, which examines the intricate relationship between the technology, regulation and social effects of visual representation. Along these lines, Topo's CreativeMornings presentation was an eloquent and well-researched talk about beautiful imagery in a consumption-driven world, hegemony and the need for media education, and every creative professionals moral responsibility to not abuse our power.
