Last Fall we had the fun task of plumbing our directory of local talent for some of the very best creatives in Vancouver to put forward as TEDx speakers. It gave us a chance to connect with Mike Nowland and Carson Ting, who we felt truly embody the collaborative spirit of VANCVR, through their co-created murals.
Around that time, Carson was in Hong Kong getting married to Denise Cheung. The newlyweds bring that spirit of collaboration home (literally) with their experimental project Chairman Ting Industries. Their goal in every creative endeavour is to make you smile—a mission we can totally get behind.

What do you do?During the day I am a Senior Art Director at Blast Radius working on the digital global Air Jordan and Nike accounts. At night I run an experimental visual workshop company called Chairman Ting Industries with my wife, Denise Cheung. We started this company a few years ago as a creative outlet to try new creative things outside of advertising. We’ve taken on big to small projects ranging from a full on adidas Originals art party in Hong Kong and Shanghai to just a wall mural in our friend’s apartment. Every project we commit to has to meet one important criteria: Is it fun?
Since opening up shop we’ve had people from Germany, London, Ukraine, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Australia, Italy, Mexico, LA and Toronto call us for project inquiries.
Why do you love being a creative in Vancouver?
I think we have a huge and active pool of internationally recognized creatives in this town so it makes me feel a lot more connected to the rest of the world. I also love how crappy the weather is half the time because it allows me to be less distracted and forces me to focus on my creative side projects.
How would you like to collaborate with other local creatives?
We’re constantly collaborating with local creatives whether it’s a small side gig or a huge commercial shoot. I’ve been very fortunate that both my commercial and personal work allows me to collaborate with a wide range of creatives from photographers, writers, directors, developers, illustrators and artisans.
