This coming weekend - Friday June 14th to Sunday June 16th - fishing without a license is not only legal, it’s encouraged! Family Fishing Weekend has happened every Father's Day in British Columbia for the past 14 years thanks to a kind give from the provincial and federal governments. Since I became a father 4 and a half years ago I've participated in every single one (though I've also paid for an annual license every year, as I like to fish).

My son and I last year at Brohm Lake

So let's approach the math in my headline, shall we? In 2012 there were 3,778,367 adult residents in this province. Multiplying that by the cost of a fishing license for 3 days (found HERE), the total give from the provincial Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and the federal Fisheries and Oceans Canada would come to a whopping total of $75,567,340. That's if every single adult in BC threw a line in the water. That's a pretty significant give to encourage participation in one of my personal favourite natural resources, as well as encouraging people to hang out with their kids.
