Vancouver on the Cheap: Summer Theatre

If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap".

If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap". In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.

This summer, once again, there is a plethora of free and cheap entertainment options to fill your nights. To start, here is a list of some awesome and thrifty theatre options for this summer.

PT at the Hollywood

By donation - June 22 at 8pm

This is a short film and 24 hour Theatre Under the Gun Fest. For the uninitiated, a 24 hour theatre festival occurs when a group of artists, including a playwright, director, and actors, get inspiration packages, spend 24 hours writing and rehearsing a play, and then perform it. It's the freshest theatre you'll see, with a few short films thrown into the mix. And it's by donation, in the glamorous, historical Hollywood Theatre!

Connected: The Musical by Peter Abando, Alison Chisholm, and Jennifer Pielak

Pay-What-You-Can Preview - July 18

A group of young people work for an online dating firm and are trying to transform the way people connect with each other in this brand-new, homegrown musical. It's "love in a digital age" with a twist of actual human connections.

Show and Tell

By donation - July 30

Another round of Show and Tell is coming up this summer at Cocoanymph! This is the most participatory theatre you'll find - the audience brings objects that they care about, and share their stories.

Wolf at the Door by Tina Teeninga

2-for-$15 preview - August 7th

$10 tix if you buy in advance during the month of June

Another locally-written work, this one is about a family trying to hold onto their way of life when mass production takes over in the Industrial Revolution. There's a line of current thought running through this piece as concerns over where our products are made rise along with a movement back to hand-made, locally produced goods.

Two Rooms by Lee Blessing

$10 preview - August 13th

Playing at the Carousel Theatre this is a frighteningly topical play produced by a brand new theatre company. The two rooms of the story are the windowless hostage room of an American hostage being held by terrorists, and the room in his home in America where his wife has stripped away all furnishings to try to identify with his ordeal.

Ongoing: East Van Comedy has a lot of shows throughout the summer (and all year round), and they all tend to be at or under $10.
