If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap".

If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap". In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.

For a while I've been seeing a sign in my neighbourhood: "Cheap, Fresh Produce - Mobile Food Market Thursdays." That's the kind of sign that always attracts my attention. Finally, yesterday, I was in the right place at the right time and got to check out this mobile market at Hemlock and 12th. It is part of the Plenty Campaign, a campaign to a) raise awareness about the dearth of options for cheap, fresh produce in the Westside, specifically in relation to seniors who have a harder time getting around, and b) provide cheap, fresh produce in places where seniors congregate (like, say, outside a senior's centre). Luckily, you don't have to be a senior to purchase the produce, and it is, indeed, both cheap and delicious.

The market is seasonal, and next week is the last week. So, Westside residents! Check the website for The Plenty Campaign to find out where they'll be and get yourself some cheap produce. Then sign up for their email list so you can find out when they start up again in the spring. What a fantastic way to get your produce on the cheap, while supporting a great initiative.
