Long Weekends are great for getaways, be summer, or any season here in BC!

Back in the warmer days I picked up a Honda CR-V LX, loaded it up with camping gear and supplies and headed to the great wilderness of Golden Ears Provincial Park.

Check out some shots below, and reminisce when it was nice and warm...

Welcome to the latest series of Super, Neighbours blog posts where we highlight incredible travel destinations in British Columbia!

I was pretty excited to drive/hang out with the Honda CR-V LX...I've driven it before in a car-share and I knew it would fit everything I needed for camping easily (and I was right).

Another bonus of having the car was being able to make the trip to get the bait that I knew I'd be needing for the weekend. Also, check out my tackle box.

I ended up going ahead of our group since we didn't have a reservation - most parks have several non-reservable sites available to people on a first-come-first-serve basis, though I highly recommend making reservations, esp. on long weekends, like the Thanksgiving one coming up! But for the more spontaneous (and risk-taking) types like us, we plunged in head first and went for it with our fingers crossed.

I got one site for the night and ended up waking up at pretty much sunrise the next day to get the rest for the weekend, but it worked out perfectly.

Remember when it was sunny every day in July, and then it rained for that ONE day? That's when we went camping. I managed to arrive about 24 hours before the fire ban went into place and had one fire that night with the wood that I brought and then it was back to lanterns for light...in the rain.

Golden Ears Provincial Park is one of the largest parks in the province, and has so many outdoor activities to offer. Trails for hiking and horseback riding, Alouette Lake for swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, canoeing, boating and fishing...and of course camping. Oh, and the VIA sponsored park bench is located here too!

I could do an entire post on camping tips (many of which are stemmed from surviving festival camping) but one of my biggest is to bring growlers! We had a few filled up from Parallel 49 Brewing in Vancouver and it most definitely cuts down on waste/recycling when leaving!

Pretty much every hour that we weren't eating and the rain stopped, we went fishing or (on our last day) went to the beach!  We managed to haul up a few different types of fish in all different sizes, though none really big enough to keep. Maybe next time we can rent a canoe (you can do this on site!) for the day and try our luck away from the shore.

Golden Ears is a great place, and I'm sure will be busy this long weekend yet again! - be sure to dress warm if you're heading out there!

Thanks again to Honda for the car, I'm sorry I brought it back so dirty, but I like to think of it as 'well loved'! Happy adventuring everyone!
