Cineworks and Brief Encounters present Intersections

Another VIFF season has come and gone, and we still have sunshine on the horizon! Hooray for an extension of this September-like weather! I'd also like to thank all the VIFF volunteers for presenting a fabulous festival in the midst of so much change

Another VIFF season has come and gone, and we still have sunshine on the horizon! Hooray for an extension of this September-like weather! I'd also like to thank all the VIFF volunteers for presenting a fabulous festival in the midst of so much change. The closure of the Empire Granville 7 Cinemas left everyone on the edge of their seat, but a large movement of filmgoers found a new hub in the International Village in Chinatown, with a satellite of new venues supporting it. The Centre, SFU, the Playhouse, and the Rio all came together to give the films a home, along the mainstays of the Pacific Cinematheque and the Vancity Theatre. And special commendations go to Alan Franey who mentioned it's his final year as Festival Director at VIFF after 26 years of service! Bravo to Alan!

And now, I have another film related announcement to make. A show of hands; how many of you here know that Cineworks, Vancouver's Independent Filmmakers Society is actually 2 years OLDER than VIFF! Yes, VIFF's inaugural year was 1982, but Cineworks has been operating since 1980, and they're ramping up for a big collaborative event later this month! It's a unique partnership with Brief Encounters, the collective that pairs 2 creative minds from different disciplines and challenges them to create something in 2 weeks! In this case, the timelines were set to give the artists 2 months to complete their film collaborations. Here's the event poster:

From the Brief Encounters website:

INTERSECTIONS Live is an extension of INTERSECTIONS, where we paired 2 creatives from different forms to produce a film. We encourage you to watch all 6 films before attending, as INTERSECTIONS Live is not a film screening. It is a live performance/installation event based on the INTERSECTIONS films.

You can watch all six films in advance here with this handy YouTube playlist, but I'd like to highlight the last in this playlist here entitled PICTURE LOCKING. It's Dance Dance Revolution meets Final Cut Pro! Swanky dance moves, a superb metaphor for the modern day film-making process! Created by street dance artist Kim Sato & filmmaker Nathan Boey.

6 films featuring:

Brian Lye: Filmmaker | Zuzia Juszkiewicz: Composer & Visual Artist

Zachary Rothman: Filmmaker | Howie Tsui: Visual Artist

Flick Harrison: Filmmaker

Nathan Boey: Filmmaker | Kim Sato: Street Dance Artist

Karen Lam: Filmmaker | Lauren Marsden: Performance Artist

Mina Shum: Filmmaker | Ashley Andel: Visual Artist

I have enjoyed many of the locally produced Brief Encounters shows in the past, and so I heartily recommend this upcoming cinematic edition! Tickets are available in advance here.

The event will take place on Saturday evening, October 26th at Cineworks's Howe Street facility at Helmcken (enter at the back lane). Each pairing will get one screening room in the building where the films will loop over the course of the night, punctuated by 3 or 4 "performances" in each room over the course of the evening. Throw in the fact that there will be a DJ, a cash bar, and no doubt lots of Halloween-clad people, you can consider your weekend solved!
