Yesterday, when my wife asked me if I wanted to bring our 5 year old son to The Hive for an afternoon, I was at first confused. Why, on his last day of spring break, would we be dragging him out to the offices of "a non-profit co-working space that offers desk space, meeting space and event space for small businesses", I wondered? The answer became clear as she explained to me that not everything revolves around work, and that this Hive she was referring to is a bouldering gym near our home in Southeast False Creek.

Surrounded by a bunch of industrial buildings (it is on Industrial Ave, after all) and dangerously close to Beta 5 Chocolates, the place was so much fun that I can't believe I hadn't been to it previous, or even heard about it through friends. As a newcomer they taught me how to properly fall off of the myriad of climbing spaces, and also taught the basics of proper technique. To be clear, this is not a playground for little kids, but it is loads of fun and as far as I know anybody who can climb (see the photo above) are welcome as long as they follow the rules and they keep their heads up. There are no climbing harnesses, so injuries are a possibility, but this is certainly something I enjoyed with the family and will be coming back to in the future.
