On Saturday, April 5, 30 Vancouverites will make home cooked meals for strangers all to benefit local charities during #dinnerpartyYVR, presented by CresseySPUD, Fortis BC and Two Rivers help provide the dinner ingredients, while Serendipity Winery and Granville Island Brewery will pour libations. After dinner, Modo, The Car-Coop will whisk diners off to the After Party, hosted at Meccanica.

And over the next two weeks, we’ll be sharing some hobby chef’s stories. To support a meal, visit dinnerpartyyvr.com.

Hi Michelle. What inspired you to sign on as a Hobby Chef?
I love to cook and love new experiences with new people – and the fact that the money raised goes to our chosen charity is just amazing.

Describe your “Cause We Carbonara” dinner.
We are having a comfort food type meal, a meal the moms and kids at Cause We Care would enjoy. It’s fairly simple, yet warm, comforting and filling. And something all ages of kids would like.

What can people expect when they arrive at your dinner party?
They can expect laughter, a relaxed atmosphere and a really good time with some really great people. Casual and fun.

Where’s home?
My house is in Deep Cove outside of the city of Vancouver limits, so our dinner is being hosted by David Scott, who has a home in the city. He very generously and thoughtfully offered the use of his beautiful very cool place for us… and barely batted an eye when our numbers of diners kept increasing! We wouldn’t be able to do this without him – he is an awesome host.

What does Cause We Care do or support?
Cause We Care supports local single mothers and kids living in poverty in Vancouver. We are working alongside the YWCA to build the YWCA Cause we Care House on Hastings Street. There will be a library, social amenities and housing units for low income single mothers with kids. Women first of all need safe secure housing in order to get jobs and move forward in life. We also fund an after school program at an Inner City School to provide a safe space for vulnerable kids. We have a Mother’s Day hamper drive and a Christmas hamper drive (the largest in the city) to provide necessities to moms and kids via a number of front line organizations.

What do you want us to know most about Cause We Care?
If we can bring a smile, a glimmer of hope, a feeling of safety and direction for positive momentum in ways these moms and kids are already striving for – that’s how we want to support them. They have the determination and drive already, and they amaze us.
