Vancouver Heritage Foundation is a registered charity supporting the conservation of heritage buildings and structures in recognition of their contribution to the city’s economy, sustainability and culture. |
Many Vancouverites know the stories of Captain Vancouver and Simon Fraser, the development of the railway, Granville Townsite, and the establishment of the City of Vancouver in 1886 followed by the Great Fire.
But Vancouver’s history has many more layers. Vancouver Heritage Foundation (VHF) and Musqueam Indian Band invite you to explore another aspect of our past, present and future.
The Musqueam people have lived on the South Coast for thousands of years. Their traditional territory occupies what is now Vancouver and its surrounding areas.
Travelling by bus, tour participants experience the stories and history passed down by Musqueam Elders that tell an important part of the history of Vancouver. From the cesnae?m site in South Vancouver, the tour takes in several locations in Stanley Park, travels the water’s edge around Second Beach, English Bay, Kitsilano, and Spanish Banks, stops at the grounds of the Museum of Anthropology, and visits Musqueam including a tour of the Musqueam Cultural Centre Gallery.
Between destinations you’ll learn from Musqueam guides about traditional practices, arts and crafts, songs, legends and even some personal stories.
Two dates: June 21st 9am-1pm & July 27th 9am-1pm
The June 21st tour is scheduled on National Aboriginal Day, and the tour will end at Musqueam where participants can join the community as it celebrates with the opening of the Claiming Space exhibit in the Musqueam Cultural Centre, and the unveiling of the refurbished Savage Warrior Canoe. There will be opportunity to play slahal, enjoy weaving demonstrations, and share in good food.
We hope to see you there!
