How I got rich betting on wiener dog races... or not

This past Friday some idiot (me!) was ON THE RADIO telling listeners of The Peak 102.7FM that you're allowed to place bets on the wiener dog races at Hastings Park and that you could actually make money by doing that.

This past Friday some idiot (me!) was ON THE RADIO telling listeners of The Peak 102.7FM that you're allowed to place bets on the wiener dog races at Hastings Park and that you could actually make money by doing that. But that idiot was wrong! If he had done just one more minute of research before going on air he would've been able to share the facts that no you can't bet on the dogs but yes you can bet on the horse races that happen between each dog race, all day, during the Wiener Dog Races at Hastings Park.

The beauty of the annual wiener dog races is, of course, not that you can make money betting on them (again, you can't do that). The beauty is that they take the time to put together this ridiculous event that brings together dog lovers of all shapes (and dogs of mostly one shape: wiener shape) to cheer for a race which most of the participants don't even know is happening. If you can believe it, the pooch wearing green in the photo above was the winner of the first race, in which he's running in in the photo (though he had no idea he was running in it). Our friends at the Straight sent a photographer who put together an incredible gallery including a photo of the winning dog drinking out of his trophy. Check that out HERE.

And here's the audio segment from Friday where I wrongly said you could bet on the canines. Sorry about that.
