The salmon are back!

It's that time of year again! The time when our local salmon overcome seemingly impossible obstacles to return to their urban birthplaces to spawn again.

It's that time of year again! The time when our local salmon overcome seemingly impossible obstacles to return to their urban birthplaces to spawn again. This is the third year in a row that salmon have returned to Still Creek after an 80 year absence, now that restoration and restocking efforts have transformed Still Creek from one of the most polluted streams in the Lower Mainland to one of hope! The video below was taken yesterday just west of Gilmore Ave in Burnaby, and shows three chum salmon frolicking in the shallows. One lone salmon was also spottted just off Broadway in East Vancouver, but it darted away too quickly for me to take its picture. Seeing salmon spawn in the city feels almost magical to me, and at the same time I know that it's only through decades of hard work by countless hands that makes this kind of thing possible!
