The Ultimate Mainland Road Trip: 4 Spots to Check Out

Summer in Vancouver has come to a close, but there's still plenty of time to fit in a road trip.

Summer in Vancouver has come to a close, but there's still plenty of time to fit in a road trip. With so many amazing destinations to check out before the trees officially start to turn yellow, what's a Vancouverite to do but pack up and hit the road one last time?

For avid travelers who are looking to earn some extra points for all the mileage they'll be clocking along the way, Scotiabank has teamed up with GM in releasing a new suite of Visa cards that allow you to do just that. Canadians can expect to earn up to 5% in GM earnings on everyday purchases, that will be applicable towards covering the purchase price or lease down payment of a new GM vehicle (including Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac). With that in mind, there really isn't a reason not to have your traveling expenses help fund a brand spanking new car in the future.

Here’s our list of four amazing destinations to check out as you tour the mainland—it's definitely time to start planning your route!

1. Whistler

The Must-Do

While it may seem like a no-brainer to go to Whistler for the winter sports, mountain biking and even hiking are both popular activities to do during the warmer months. If anything, enjoy the alpine slopes before the snow sets in to gain a whole new appreciation for the area.

The Must-Eat

If you're looking to dine in style, then don't even think about missing out on Araxi Restaurant + Bar on your trip. This establishment offers the best in contemporary dining and its staff's dedication to culinary excellence can pretty much be tasted in every bite.

The Must-See

Call us nostalgic, but we always make it a point to visit the iconic Olympic rings and statue of Ilanaaq (the 2010 Olympic mascot) whenever we make our way to Whistler. As a key location during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, we can't help but thinking back to the amazing atmosphere when the whole world converged at Whistler five years ago. What better way to relive that glory than to capture these iconic monuments in photos once again?

2. Pemberton

The Must-Do

You wouldn't know it just by looking at this Wild West themed village north of Whistler, but Pemberton is actually home to hot springs, like the Meager Creek and Pebble Creek Hot Springs. If Harrison is too mainstream for your taste, consider making the trip out to this lesser known destination to enjoy the same natural amenity.

The Must-Eat

Serving up all the pub food classics and more, Mile One Eating House is undoubtedly the best place to grab a juicy burger or sandwich in Pemberton. If a look at its extensive menu isn't an indication of its sheer dedication to serving up a North American classic the right way, then we're not sure what is.

The Must-See

Pemberton may be lesser known as an outdoor sports and recreation destination due to its proximity to the better-known Whistler, but that doesn't mean it isn't one. Adrenaline junkies can indulge in a variety of activities such as biking, hiking or even horseback riding while in the area. Plus, they have an awesome distillery.

3. The Okanagan

The Must-Do

If you're traveling to BC’s wine country, then a proper vineyard tour and wine tasting is certainly in order. Better yet, why not just stay in a bed and breakfast on a vineyard? Two B&Bs to check out include Pineacre on the Lake (for lovers of a lakefront view) and Forgotten Hill, which is located on a sprawling 148-acre private estate.

The Must-Eat

When it comes to dining, the general consensus of Okanagan locals seem to be that Crush Bistro is the place eat. Continually voted as one of the best wine bars and casual dining restaurants in the Okanagan, this is one place you don't want to miss on your road trip. After all, what's better than a killer lunch and wine pairing?

The Must-See

Known as a great destination for water-sports and boating, visitors should definitely check out the major lakes in the area, such as Okanagan, Osoyoos and Swan Lakes. Drive by, take a dip and be sure to watch out for the Ogopogo!

4. Harrison Hot Springs

The Must-Do

As if the name of this destination didn't already give it away, but you certainly want to stop by the hot springs in this village at the southern end of the Fraser Valley. This resort community is known across Canada for its warm baths and beautiful scenery—and for good reason too.

The Must-Eat

Who would've thought to drive to Harrison Hot Springs for a slice of pizza (among other reasons of course)? Well, that's exactly what the Hungry Chef Eatery entices visitors to do as its pizza and other menu offerings have gained quite a following over the years.

The Must-See

Harrison Hot Springs may be famous for its hot springs (duh), but another destination to check out while you're in the area is Sasquatch Provincial Park, which is just a short drive away. Aside from being a prime location for wildlife watching, it’s also a great camping spot.

Now that you have your Mainland road trip destination list started, don't forget to plan your travel expenses out, too.
