While its name is fit for a horror movie, there's nothing scary about Screaming Cat Lake.

Hiking to this scenic tarn in Whistler involves strolling part of the Rainbow-Sproatt Flank Trail — an inviting multi-use thoroughfare on the west side of the valley.

From the top of Mountain View Drive in Alpine Meadows, follow the Lower 19 Mile Creek Trail to the Screaming Cat Lake Connector, which forks right. This brings you to the Flank Trail, where you again turn right.

It's worth taking the side trail to the Valley Lookout. The superlative view includes Wedge Mountain, Blackcomb Peak, Whistler Mountain, and Black Tusk (T’ekt’akmuyin tl’a In7inyaxa7en) across the valley, and Rainbow Mountain behind you.

Tired hikers might call it a day at the Valley Lookout. If you have energy to spare, continue up the Flank Trail to its junction with the Screaming Cat Lake Trail.

A left turn here takes you to the pretty lake, an excellent swimming hole. Round trip distance: 13.4 kilometres.

This hike lies in the territories of the Lil'wat Nation and Squamish Nation.
