Bridging Cultures. Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michio walk in the Nitobe Memorial Garden on July 13, 2009. The garden opened in 1960 in memory of Dr. Inazo Nitobe, who sought to be “a bridge across the Pacific.”
