Canadian Immigrant Women Share Their Stories at the VPL

In the new book, Wherever I Find Myself , Canadian immigrant women share their diverse experiences as newcomers to Canada.

In the new book, Wherever I Find Myself, Canadian immigrant women share their diverse experiences as newcomers to Canada. From a variety of ethnicities, circumstances and intersecting identities, the collection of stories presents a truly powerful range of experiences from new Canadians.

On Tuesday, April 4th from 7 PM - 8:30 PM at the VPL, nine of these women will discuss how pieces of their personal history have brought them closer to, or farther from, the feeling of belonging. Stories include a woman from Burma who re-discovers history in spite of adversity, and a Filipino woman who recalls the harrowing experience of attempting to flee her own dangerous situation.

Editor Miriam Matejova opens the anthology by writing “One of my motivations behind this book was my own lingering frustration and desire to tell someone (or everyone) that we all have come from somewhere. […] That we don’t leave our home countries to take anything away from anyone.” Embedded in Matejova’s introduction is an invitation to “those who do not identify with the immigrant label to engage in a critical reflection on what it means to be a Canadian immigrant woman.”

Come celebrate and participate in these women’s stories and engage with their experiencing of belonging in Canada. This event is free, open to the public, fully accessible, and includes free childminding services during the program. Copies of Wherever I Find Myself will be available for purchase, however purchase is not necessary for entry.
