It was in 1912 that the VPD hired its first female employees: Nancy (or Lurancy) Harris and Minnie Miller (or Millar). Their salary was $80 a month. Police worked eight hours a day, seven days a week. They were expected to attend court on their own time, as well as “any celebrations or parades where their attendance was expected.” By this time, the police department had become quite progressive; they now had a chief’s car, a detective car, a paddy wagon and an ambulance. Later in the year the VPD also got its first police boat.
