In-N-Out copycat CaliBurger shuts down Vancouver location

CaliBurger, the In-N-Out copycat burger joint that opened in Vancouver in 2016, has just shut down their downtown location.

They touted themselves as a "California-style" burger chain, but now CaliBurger, the In-N-Out copycat that opened in Vancouver in 2016, has already shut down their downtown location.

With a menu of burgers, double burgers, shakes, and loaded "CaliStyle" fries that not-so-secretly were inspired by the popularity of In-N-Out, the California-based franchise has opened up all around the globe, with locations not only in the U.S. and Canada, but also in Spain, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Malaysia, China, and many, many more.

Still, Vancouverites who were driven by the hype didn't necessarily take the bite more than once for a "gotta try it" visit. CaliBurger announced Saturday via Facebook that they were closing immediately:

"Dear Vancouverites,

Today will be our last day on Thurlow in downtown Vancouver. Please come by for your last fix of CaliBurger in 2017!

It has been a pleasure to serve you and we look forward to continuing to serve you at our upcoming locations. Please join us in January when we re-open at SFU in Burnaby. We look forward to seeing you there!"

In addition to their planned SFU location, CaliBurger's site indicates they are planning to open in Surrey at Guildford.

Similarly, Toronto's Big Smoke Burger came into Vancouver with a ton of fanfare (and a crazy first-day line up), setting up at Broadway and Cambie. They, too, shuttered suddenly, opting to focus on an SFU outpost, which has since closed.

Incidentally, if you want the real In-N-Out, the SoCal-born home of the Double Double and Animal Fries recently opened their second Oregon location in Grant's Pass; it's the closest location to Vancouver so far.
