A 20-year-old Vancouver man had his car impounded for seven days and was ticketed for excessive speeding after being clocked driving 140 kilometres per hour in West Vancouver Feb. 20.

A West Vancouver police officer pulled over the driver of a 2018 BMW 430i at approximately 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning on Highway 1 off Taylor Way.

In addition to the excessive speeding infraction, the novice driver was also given a violation ticket for being on an electronic device while driving after the officer noted he was talking on his cellphone.

“In addition, when offences like that involve a new driver they can be reviewed by the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles and the superintendent can consider a driving prohibition in addition to the vehicle impound,” said West Vancouver police spokesman Jeff Palmer.

Fifty-two vehicles have been impounded for excessive speeding in West Vancouver so far this year, Palmer noted.

“If you’re traveling at speeds well in access of the posted speed limit you are dramatically reducing the amount of time that you will have to react to something unexpectedly happening on the road in front of you,” he said. “You put yourself at much greater risk, you put other people around you at much greater risk.”
