|If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled “cheap” and the other labeled “awesome”, the middle point where they cross over could be labeled “Vancouver on the Cheap”. In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.

The PuSh Festival is by far one of the coolest things that happens in Vancouver. This is your chance to see all that hip, adventurous, weird, and wonderful performance art from around the world. The stuff that pushes (get it? Pushes?) boundaries and that would otherwise be reserved for people with connections to the underground arts scene in Berlin or New York. While most shows can range in price from $15-50, there are a handful of completely free shows to check out. Plus, they have a fantastic program for anyone under 24 years old: apply for their youth passport and get $5 admission to EVERY SHOW. Now’s the only time faking an ID for being under age seems worthwhile. Check the listings below for the free shows, and then why not jump in and see what else is in the program? If you’re budgeting out your entertainment dollars, this is where you want to start.
Le Grand Continental – a public dance show in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza (outside!) featuring a gigantic cast of local community dancers.
Human Library – this is the third year of this intriguing event. Go to the downtown branch of the VPL, and instead of checking out a book, check out a person. You get 20 minutes to talk with someone from any variety of walks of life.
Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society – a feature-length film installation at the Contemprorary Art Gallery.
Fare Thee Well! – a gigantic art installation, from Vancouver Lookout across 2,000 meters of Vancouver.
Film Series – just what it sounds like, a series of films screened on various nights spanning the entire festival.
Experience Spheres – step into one of the spheres dotting Vancouver and be fed sensory stimuli that will take you to a brand new place.
