Vancouver on the Cheap: John Casablanca’s Body Spa

February 15, 2013
If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled “cheap” and the other labeled “awesome”, the middle point where they cross over could be labeled “Vancouver on the Cheap”. In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.

Got a cheap-living tip you’d like to share? Send it in!

Every once and a while, it’s nice to get have someone else help you get a little more beautiful, right? Not that we aren’t all unique snowflakes, each beautiful in our own way, but that doesn’t mean we don’t occasionally want to step it up a bit. Spa treatments, including manicures, pedicures, waxing, tinting, and facials: these are what I’m talking about. I wouldn’t do any of these things on a regular basis, but they can be nice treats! Sadly, they also tend to be pricey treats.

Well, there is a solution, and luckily that solution isn’t melting sugar on your stove and trying to rip it off your leg with a piece of scrap fabric you found in a pile under your bed. Instead, that solution is John Casablanca’s Body Spa.

First of all, yes, I am recommending you have students wax, pluck, tint, and paint your precious body. And just to prove I’m serious about this, I went for it: I went in for a 1/2 leg wax and an eyelash tint. That’s right, I had a student rip hair out of my body and put dye right around my eyes. Why? Because, dear reader, I care about you, and I couldn’t truly recommend getting students to give you spa treatments if I’d wussed out with a manicure (they are far too easily reversible and thus elicit almost no pain or regret). I risked hair follicle and, let’s be honest, my powers of sight, to see if getting beauty treatments from students is really worth it. Spoiler alert: it is!

The procedure felt almost identical to being in an honest-to-goodness spa, with a few notable exceptions:

1) It took longer. This was the main drawback: I was there for 1.5 hours for my two treatments, and we had to rush at the end. If you don’t have a lot of time, this might not be the best bet for you, especially since they seem to only be open during regular working hours.

2) There was an instructor checking in every once and a while. This is a good thing, but of course, doesn’t happen in a fancy spa.

3) The environment was a little more institutional, a little less zen. They did still have private, curtained-off areas for treatments, so you definitely had privacy (minus the instructor check-ins), just no soft colours and untreated wood finishes to add to that calm-factor. Really though, all the equipment and products were also right up there with anything I’ve seen in my limited spa experience, they just didn’t have the fancy-pants decor and pleasant fragrances floating through the air at all times.

4) Perhaps because my esthetician was a student, I felt much more comfortable asking questions than I might in a normal spa. Since I’d never had an eyelash tint done before, I did have some questions in the process, but she knew what she was talking about and answered them all, explaining everything as we went. I certainly felt like I was in good hands.

5) The price! A 1/2 leg wax is $12, and I’ve never seen it for less than $20 anywhere else. The lash tint is $11, and again, a little research tells me that’s generally at least $18-20 as well. Other prices are great as well: manicures are $14, a mani/pedi combo is $32, facials are $30, the list goes on.

The nail area at John Casablanca’s.

Now, I’ll admit that these prices are higher than my general philosophy of $10 or less for Vancouver on the Cheap posts. The reason this makes the cut is because spa treatments are totally voluntary bonuses on every day life, and this really is the cheapest deal you’ll find if you’re not into doing it yourself.

If you’re concerned about putting yourself in the hands of students, I can confidently say that you needn’t fret. They practice on themselves and each other first to make sure they know what they’re doing, are really knowledgable about the procedures (maybe even more so, since all the detailed knowledge is fresh in their minds, as opposed to long-forgotten with bad habits picked up after years on the job), and are very careful. I really felt well taken care of, and the only major difference was the time spent on basic procedures – that’s what tips you off that these are students, not professionals.

The only other thing to keep in mind is that they don’t offer all services all the time. It’s not until a class has learned a service that it’s offered, so if you have something a little more “deluxe” that you’re after, you may not be able to get it whenever you want.

Check out the John Casablanca’s website for more details on pricing and scheduling an appointment. (Heads up: the website’s flash so I can’t link directly to the spa page. Click “Menu”, “Body Spa”, then the cover of the magazine, and “Spa Menu” to find the info you’re looking for. And yes, this is why flash websites are the worst.)

NOTE! Vancouver on the Cheap will be on a temporary hiatus for the next month-and-some, making a triumphant return on Friday, April 5th. Thanks for your understanding, and feel free to keep sending me any cheap-living tips you’ve got between now and then.

Vancouver on the Cheap: Storm Crow Tavern

Self-described as a sports bar for nerds, I have wanted to check out Storm Crow Tavern for some time now. I’ve got no shortage of love for the Whedonverse, the Doctor, Kvothe, and many other awesome things that have for some reason been classified as “nerdy” by the general public instead of “the awesomest things ever.”

Regardless, there is now a haven for all us nerds, as well as the commonfolk who want to rub shoulders, and that haven features nerd-tastic decorations, lots of board games, and a super cheap menu!

Every single item on the menu is $6! And the food is truly delicious. I had the portobello mushroom sandwich and it was right up there with some of the best grilled veggie sandwiches I’ve had – and if you’ve ever ordered a grilled veggie sandwich in a restaurant, you know that it’s always a gamble.

Heads up: the drinks are not all that cheap, but the low-priced food makes up for it.

Seriously, try it out. Even if you’re not really into that nerd stuff, it’s got the feel of a cozy neighbourhood pub that can be so lacking what with all the new and hip places opening every day. Plus, the cheap food is a major draw!

Vancouver on the Cheap: Ping Pong Night at the Biltmore

February 1, 2013
If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled “cheap” and the other labeled “awesome”, the middle point where they cross over could be labeled “Vancouver on the Cheap”. In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.

Got a cheap-living tip you’d like to share? Send it in!

Here’s something new: where do you go to play ping pong? A night club? Sure, if it’s cheap! (And awesome.) About once a month, our friends at The Biltmore Cabaret host Ping Pong Club Night, and tomorrow is one of those nights.

The deal: pay $3 cover and get yourself a racquet. Then there are 10 rounds of ping pong championships to be played, all boiling down to one winner who will get some pretty sweet prizes. Plus, you get to stick around for Glory Days for free afterwards!

This is what I walked into last Saturday night at Ping Pong Night.

I went and checked it out last week (this is the tough part of my job), and it was, truly, an awesome night. Doors are at 8pm for the ping pong, and I got there a little late (okay, it was 9:30), so the ping pong was already well under way, and racquets were in high demand.

The way it works is a round-the-world style game where everyone who’s playing stands in a circle around the table. The first person (whoever happens to be standing at the end of the table), hits the ball and then moves over, and the next person steps into place. Around and around it goes! You get eliminated if you miss, hit the net, hit out of bounds, or otherwise do something that would get your opponent a point in a regular game. The game continues until there is one champion for that round.

After ten rounds of round-the-world, the ten champions come back together for their game, playing with the same rules until one person is victorious!

Reasons why Ping Pong Night is a great event for Vancouver:

Number one: when was the last time you played ping pong? In high school gym class? In your grandparents’ basement? Golden opportunity to relive something youthful!

Number two: a little healthy competition makes everyone happier, and friendlier. I managed to get in there for one round, and right away I made friends with the people around me. People were chatting with strangers, not only in the round-robyn, but in the crowd observing the game too. Nothing like a little ping pong to break down social barriers and get people talking.

Number three: some people got all dressed up in crazy retro ping pong gear, and that’s just fun. Especially when they stick around for Glory Days afterwards and are mildly out of place (although, this is The Biltmore, so really, it would take a whole different aesthetic to be truly out of place.)

Ping Pong Night Club at The Biltmore
Saturday, Feb. 2nd at 8pm
$3 cover (includes racquet)
Stick around for Glory Days!

If you can’t make it tomorrow, check the schedule, staff informed me that it happens about once a month.

Vancouver on the Cheap: Who’s Got the Cheese?

January 25, 2013
If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled “cheap” and the other labeled “awesome”, the middle point where they cross over could be labeled “Vancouver on the Cheap”. In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.

Got a cheap-living tip you’d like to share? Send it in!

When you’re living on the cheap, sometimes the small joys in life have to be sacrificed. Some joys, however, are not worth sacrificing, and one of those joys is cheese.

I love cheese. There, I said it. If cheese doesn’t love me back, that’s okay, I will keep coming back to it time and time again. Even when I was earning little-to-no income as a theatre apprentice, I kept cheese as a regular part of my life. After all, you know what they say, friends and lovers come and go, but cheese makes life worth living. (No? Nobody else says that? Oh… well, did I mention that I love cheese?)

Okay, now that I’ve made you all think of Liz Lemon one too many times, let me get to the point: cheese ain’t cheap. But it’s a necessary part of life.

So what’s a cheapskate to do?

The problem is that most of the time when you buy the cheapest cheese in the store you get semi-cheese flavoured plastic. Not so fun. My best tip for avoiding this fate? Get the old-style cheddar whenever you can. Mild and medium seem to increase plastic-flavouring more and more. I’m not going to say that the super-cheap old cheddar is amazing, but it’s definitely your best, and cheesiest bet.

Sale cheese at No Frills. This is the cheapest per-gram deal on cheese I have found thus far in Vancouver.

Now, where to find this cheese?

There are essentially three options here, and I am sorry to report that none of them are those happy, warm, Mom-and-Pop-type shops. That’s only because Mom and Pop tend to sell much higher quality cheese, and that is just plain pricier. These options are not for the faint of heart: they are for the deal-seekers.

Option 1: Shoppers Drug Mart. I have already shared about the joys of cheap food on sale at Shoppers. The cheese is a pretty great deal too. The store brand cheese is a good deal as it is, and when it’s on sale, it’s even better – $6 for a big hunk of cheese! And if the store-brand cheese isn’t good enough for you, they’ve got Armstrong cheese that sometimes goes on sale for a sweet $4.

Option 2: No Frills. I know, I know. I don’t feel proud recommending you go to No Frills, but hey, I just recommended Shoppers Drug Mart for the second time, so I don’t have much leg to stand on, and if it’s cheap cheese you’re after, this is the place to get it. Their store brand cheese is $8 for a really large slab, and it often goes on sale for cheaper. Kilogram for kilogram, you’re definitely getting a better deal at No Frills.

Option 3: Buy Low on Mondays. As previously mentioned, Buy Low foods has daily deals, and one of those deals is cheese. Not as cheap as the No Frills cheese, but pretty darn well-priced all the same.

And that’s that, a little inside scoop on where to get the cheapest cheese in Vancouver!

It’s show and tell! For grown-ups! And it’s free!

Xua Xua Productions is the company that brought The Confessional 2.0 last summer, and this is another low-cost (or rather, no cost) event they’ve got coming up. It’s a night of show and tell where the audience is instructed to come bearing an object that has meaning to them. Then they get up, share the story of the object, and then (the best part) the audience gets to ask them questions. About anything that has sparked their interest from the person’s story. The result is an evening where strangers get to know something new about each other. It’s a bi-monthly event, held at Cocoanymph East.

One thing that’s good to note: while this is an audience-participation, group-storytelling event, it’s still a show which means you’ve got to come on time. They also have very limited seating available, so it’s best to register in advance here. Oh, and there’s a bar with $4 beer and wine!

Show and Tell
Tuesday, January 22nd at 8pm
Cocoanymph East (4 W 7th @ Ontario)

Vancouver on the Cheap: January Theatre

January 11, 2013

There’s more awesome free/super cheap live theatre coming up in 2013, and here are a few shows to kick you off in January. Two of them are in the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, pretty much the coolest festival in Vancouver, and one is a world premiere at Pacific Theatre.

Sometimes I Think, I Can See You
January 18-20, 25-27 + February 1-3 2013 12:00PM – 4:00PM
Vancouver Public Library, Central Branch, Atrium
Vancouver Art Gallery, Lobby
Yaletown-Roundhouse Skytrain Station
FREE!

Writers will be stationed in each location, armed with a laptop, a projector, and the task of writing about whatever they see. I love this – you can walk on by and observe, stick around for some voyeuristic entertainment, and either way you are risking being a part of the live art.

Human Library
January 18-20, 25-27 + Feb 1-3, 2013 12:00PM – 4:00PM
Vancouver Public Library Central Branch, 3rd floor
FREE!

People say Vancouver is an unfriendly city. I beg to differ, and this is just another opportunity to prove them wrong! Go to the third floor of the library to the special PuSh Festival circulation desk and your “book” options will be things like a Female Heavy Machinery Engineer, Refugee, and CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). Get introduced and have a conversation, as simple as that.

The Human Library is an initiative that began in Denmark by five people after a brutal attack on one of their friends. WHat better way to get to know the “other” in Vancouver and maybe even make it a friendlier place?

Leave of Absence
Pacific Theatre
Pay-What-You-Can – Thursday, January 24th at 8pm

I’ve mentioned the pay-what-you-can previews at Pacific Theatre before, which are always a great way to see some cheap theatre. This one deserves a special mention though: Leave of Absence is a new play by local playwright Lucia Frangione. It’s a pretty controversial story about spirituality and sexuality proving that Vancouver creates some kick-ass theatre that you can’t find anywhere else.
