Eyes on Vancouver – Your Raw Vegetables

April 30, 2013

We recently released a totally silly iPhone app with our friends at Company Policy and 49 Digital. Eyes on the World is entirely free, free of advertising, and it essentially allows you to add googly eyes to your photos, then share them. We all volunteered our time for this project because we feel it’s very important that you be able to add googly eyes to things. Like your cat. Or your friends. Or random inanimate objects. It is your right to be able to add googly eyes to things, and we want you to exercise that right with ease.

As long as people continue to use the app and share their photos with us, we’ll be running a weekly feature called Eyes on Vancouver. This week’s images came to us from a few different folks who used the “Send to V.I.A.” option within the app to send us snaps of their raw vegetables. Thanks Bryan He, Clavara and the Sanders Family!

Download the app HERE and be sure to share with us so we can share here on the blog!

The Honda Celebration of Light schedule for 2013 (@celeboflight)

April 30, 2013

A couple of fabulous announcements came out this morning at the Honda Celebration of Light press conference at Concord Pacific’s presentation centre in False Creek.

1. Red Bull Air Race Pilot Pete McLeod will be bringing his daredevil antics back to the skies in a brand new Eagle 540 aircraft! You may remember back in 2011 when he surprised us all by zooming in and performing a show that left of us in awe (VIDEO). Chatting with him this morning he explained that he grew up flying bushplanes in rural Ontario. Apparently that industry and job is a bit like the wild West (er, East) and he picked up a taste for the thrill of flight from it at a young age.

Here’s a Celebrity High Five from Pete!

2. The UK, Canada and Thailand will be the competing countries in this 23rd year of the fireworks, Vancouver’s longest running civic event. This is the first time Thailand has ever competed in the Celebration of Light. Below is the schedule.

Step inside the Britannia Mine #miningweek

April 29, 2013

Did you know that it’s currently Mining Week in British Columbia? Yep. The Legislature declared that April 28 to May 4, 2013 is BC Mining Week, with these seven days meant to shine a light on one of BC’s largest and oldest industries. It’s “an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the importance of the modern industry to British Columbians”, and there are activities planned for Vancouver and other communities around the province.

I first caught wind of it when I realized that they’re holding their Community Fair a block from my house in the Village on False Creek, at Creekside Community Centre (DETAILS HERE). While mining seems to be one of the largest industries in our province, it’s also one of the most hidden, and one of the most misunderstood (often by me), so on a whim yesterday I decided to take my son Arlo for an adventure to the Britannia Mine Museum for a crash course. You’ve seen this big structure on your way to Whistler, right? That’s the old (newly renovated on the outside) mine, and around it are a bunch of old and new buildings telling its story and the stories of the history of mining in our province.

You’ve likely also seen this thing on your way by (toddler giving two thumbs up near the wheel for size reference in case you haven’t).

Here’s what it looks like inside the mine! …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>
