VCBW – Hoppapalooza III

May 21, 2012

Hoppapalooza III…there are no words. No wonder this VCBW event sold out in hours!!! I did my best to keep track of what beers were in what photo and I’m 99% sure this is correct.
Below are only a fraction of the beers you could have tried at the party the Alibi Room threw… and after the jump there are some party photos including the 3 different kinds of chili they had for the craft beer lovers.

Taken from the Hoppapalooza guide pictured below:
I. You’re awesome.
II. Beer is awesome.
III. Brewers are awesome.
IV. The Alibi Room is awesome.
V. Rich Hope is awesome.
VI. VCBW is awesome.
VII. If anybody else is feeling like they should be called awesome & were forgotten. You’re awesome too.

Vancouver is Awesome, thinks that’s awesome. :)

START YOUR WEEK RIGHT WITH THE V.I.A. WEEKLY PLAYLIST
WEEK 120: Road Trip 2: Trip Harder

May 21, 2012
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. With 29,641+ artists, boasting 141,075+ tracks, the CBC Radio 3 web site is the absolute ultimate authority, and the home, of independent music in Canada. With that massive library along with tools for members (free to join!), we’re taking advantage of what they’ve set up by bringing you a fresh batch of music every week featuring local groups who have tracks (entire albums, even!) on the R3 site.

Last year we brought you a Road Trip Playlist when I was going on tour…this year we present you: Road Trip 2: Trip Harder…for all of you who, like myself, will be making the trek down to Sasquatch for the weekend (Sasquatch 2011 photos). Here’s a list of some our VIAindie favourites to get you ready to go while you pack up the car! Starting with Said The Whale, who are performing this year (!!!) on the Yeti Stage on Saturday at 1:20pm! (and there is a LOT of Canadian talent there as well: Hey Rosetta!, The Sheepdogs, Coeur de Pirate, Purity Ring, Metric, and Feist!)

DRIVE SAFE!

BONUS: I am STOKED to see Childish Gambino, but obviously he’s not Canadian…HOWEVER: Donald Glover does appear in this New Pornographers video, as does Todd Barry who is performing in the Comedy Tent – so there is your connection. Hopefully I’ll get to chat with them!

May 15, 2012
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. We post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in Music’ highlights some of the best concerts happening around the city…

What a busy week! Some huge, and highly entertaining shows including the #TracksOnTracks launch…plus (almost) all the Portage and Main you’d ever want (they’re playing next week too, but I’ll tell you about it then) who killed it at The Vogue. This week is hella busy with lots of VCBW events happening amongst  festival launch parties and awesome indie shows…Read up!:

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC: begins with a launch party for the 2012 Khatsahlano! Music + Arts Festival hosted by Zulu Records on Wednesday – where Kathryn Calder, The High Drops, and Capitol 6 are playing – starts at 7pm. Friday is the opening night of VCBW, as well as a show at the Media Club ft The Mocking Bird, The Never Surprise, and Ali Milner. Saturday I’ll be at the Hop-Headbangers Ball which has a little bit of Sack Blabbath (yes I wrote that correctly!). Sunday, some more beer and music with Hoppapalooza at the Alibi Room – where Rich Hope will be playing! Then Scott Cook, David Newberry, Jenny Ritter, and Eric Nassau will all be performing at Little Mountain Gallery! Have a great week!

WEEK 119: #TracksOnTracks

May 14, 2012
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. With 29,570+ artists, boasting 141,075+ tracks, the CBC Radio 3 web site is the absolute ultimate authority, and the home, of independent music in Canada. With that massive library along with tools for members (free to join!), we’re taking advantage of what they’ve set up by bringing you a fresh batch of music every week featuring local groups who have tracks (entire albums, even!) on the R3 site.

Funny story…..as soon as I learned all of the artists that would be on the #TracksOnTracks train were BC artists (Sidney York counts) I thought: I’ll make the playlist next week with them!
And then CBC Radio 3 did just that …a few days before me. So I’m going to give them credit and you can hear the podcast with Grant by clicking here or his image below. I’ve chose a few different songs from the podcast as well…so click the images below and get to know the artists before the train leaves the station!:

And here is the link to the PODCAST on Radio3…

Dinner With… Karen Pinchin at Che Baba

May 11, 2012
DINNER WITH… pairs interesting Vancouverites with top notch restaurants. We want to showcase the minds and menus of some of our favourite people and establishments. We’ll pick their brains, while they devour their dinner, and hopefully YOUwill come away inspired, enlightened and hungry…

Another week, another meal and this time it’s…

DINNER WITH… KAREN PINCHIN!

Karen Pinchin, is one busy lady and she sums it up pretty well on her website: write. edit. cook. tweet. repeat.

As you might gather from that statement, Karen is a jack of all trades…she writes, she cooks, she tell stories…you may recall a little thing called Rain City Chronicles?! I’m sure you know by know that she’s one half of the brilliant team that created this wonderful event that happens so frequently in our city.

Well she ALSO just finished her Culinary Diploma from Northwest Culinary Academy, and whipped out (pun intended!) some fancy cooking words at dinner that I had to write down and google later…

Well those are the basics on my dining partner…now onto the dinner at Che Baba on Kingsway. Your mouth is about to water…be prepared.

Wonderful wine to start the meal off… …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music Vol. 103 ft. Steph Macpherson, Prairie Dance Club, Jody Glenham, beekeeper, The Belle Game, Brother Act, Fine Times

May 8, 2012
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. We post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in Music’ highlights some of the best concerts happening around the city…

Unfortunately (for you guys) I missed the STW show last week as I was on the Sunshine Coast (which you will see photos from eventually!), but got back with a few hours to spare before the Steph Macpherson CD release show! AND there was the awesomeness that was the beekeeper’s release show…photos from both shows are below!

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC: kicks off tomorrow with the Tracks On Tracks Launch Party at the Electric Owl!!! The Matinée, Portage and Main, and Good For Grapes are all playing, PLUS a secret DJ that you’ll love, PLUS Steamwhistle is sponsoring it, PLUS…..I’m doing a train-themed photo booth. *WHOO! WHOO!* So……you better be there! Then on Friday, it’s the return of the Great Lake Swimmers (our playlist makers this week!) at the Commodore with Cold Specks. And finally, The Dudes are back in town and will be tearing it up at the Vogue with Poor Young Things, and Portage & Main on Saturday night!
