Dogtown Vancouver: Puppy Raisers wanted for PADS!

April 11, 2013

It’s a new dog once a week! Click here to find out how to get your dog posted if you haven’t sent in your photos yet!

Today’s feature in Dogtown Vancouver is about PADS (Pacific Assistance Dogs Society) and they’re looking for Puppy Raisers. Here’s some more info…

Contact person: Laura Watamanuk, Executive Director, PADS.
Background: PADS’ Mission is to Breed, Raise, Train, and Place Assistance Dogs for persons with a physical disability or who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and to support these client/dog teams for the working life of the PADS’ Assistance Dog. www.pads.ca.
Story: Very cute, nine-week-old puppies need to be raised and trained.
What Does a Puppy Raiser Do?: Puppy raisers look after the first year (10 to 14 months) of a PADS puppy’s training by housing and caring for the dog, and attending weekly training classes and then reinforcing the learning at home. It is a very social and rewarding role and many puppy raisers have been with PADS for years. Puppy raisers get the joy and fun of helping a puppy develop into a working dog that goes on to live in and assist the community where it is so needed.

A Special Appeal to Wine Lovers

Each PADS litter is named after a theme. One of the newest litters is named for wine, so PADS is making a special appeal to the wine community and wine lovers! The puppies pictured here are named:

From left to right: Pinot, Syrah, Merlot, Grigio, Bacchus, Verdot, Malbec, Gamay

Dogtown Vancouver: Jack

April 10, 2013

It’s a new dog once a week! Click here to find out how to get your dog posted if you haven’t sent in your photos yet!

Today’s dog featured in Dogtown Vancouver is Jack, Djei’s pup. Here’s what he had to say about him…

NAME: Jack.
BREED: English setter mix.
HOOD: Vancouver.
FAVOURITE SNACK: Rats.
OTHER INFO: Jack moved over to Vancouver from Moscow, Russia just a couple of months ago. He’s my emotional support animal, and his pre-immigration career was in solo hunting: he killed a number of rats in our downtown park, and hedgehogs issued red alert to the area when he came down to our cottage in the suburbs in the summer. We found him on the street three years ago, and I just wish I could know any tiny little thing about his life before we met, because apparently he’d been through a lot (when we had him x-rayed for a mild spine issue it turned out he has a bullet in his body) — but he keeps his early years to himself. He was impeccably well trained though. He must be about 9 years old by now. I seriously think he’s the best canine in the universe, and he’s on facebook too.

Dogtown Vancouver: My Pet Diaries Episode 1

April 3, 2013

It’s a new dog once a week! Click here to find out how to get your dog posted if you haven’t sent in your photos yet!

Today’s dog featured in Dogtown Vancouver: My Pet Diaries is Cheya. Here’s her story…

NAME: Cheya.
BACKGROUND: 10 years old, Shepard mix, found in a box of an abandoned litter beside a trash dumpster with her brothers and sisters. There was 9 puppies in total & they all found homes.
DIARY: Written by Jules Seaman – Real Estate Agent, CENTURY 21 In Town Realty

Dear Diary

It was just two years ago that my dog, “Cheya” was crippled with brutal arthritis. Her back five vertebrae were encased in a brutal grip of arthritis. You could feel it when you touched her back, it was like touching gristle. The crunching noise her back made when she would limp over to get a drink of water was heartbreaking.

She had deep depression in her poor sad eyes and after multiple vet visits with no solid results I was contemplating putting her down.

I was just days away from making the call to have her put down when a friend of mine introduced me to an electromagnetic mat that changed our lives…

-Jules.
