PEAK Performance Project Bootcamp

August 30, 2011

Leigh here, with an update from the PEAK Performance Project Bootcamp (Christine McAvoy would have done this but she’s busy shooting and editing super rad photos of everything we’re doing, so she asked me to jump in and post an update). We’ve been here for 5 spectacular days, and I know the artists must be learning an amazing amount because I am, and I’m here as Music BC staff.

Interested to see what we’ve been up to? Christine has posted photos from every day on Facebook. Click through the photos to see more!

Stay tuned to the PEAK Performance Project Facebook and Twitter pages for more updates as they happen!

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music Vol. 45 ft. Portage and Main, Adrian Glynn, The Sumner Brothers, Tara Lett, Guilty About Girls, Eric Solomon, Redbird, David Vertesi and Henry & The Nightcrawlers

March 22, 2011
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. We interview some of our favourite local artists, post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in Music’ highlights some of the concerts happening around the city…

This past weekend was a busy one. Portage and Main played their first ever show as a band to a sold out crowd at the Anza Club on Friday night, supported by their friends (you might recognize Savannah from Redbird singing backup). On Saturday I went to the Red Room to see the West Coast Pop showcase featuring Eric Solomon, Guilty About Girls and Tara Lett. And last night Redbird, David Vertesi and Henry & The Nightcrawlers helped the BCIT Media Club celebrate Evolution 107.9′s 5th birthday (kudos to Kirk Hamilton and Jeff Wyndham for organizing it!).

This Week In Music: Christine is back so I’ll let her fill you in on what she’ll be up to this week. One thing I’ll definitely be attending is this week’s West Coast Pop show featuring The Dudes, Treelines and Birthday Boys.

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music Vol. 44 ft. Henry & The Nightcrawlers, Cheeky Disco, Vincent Parker, PS I Love You and Diamond Rings

March 15, 2011
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. We interview some of our favourite local artists, post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in Music’ highlights some of the concerts happening around the city…

This past week I saw Henry and the Nightcrawlers at the Cobalt, a show presented by The Green Couch Sessions to celebrate Canadian Music Week. All the sets were filmed so look for them soon on their website. The next day I headed to the Biltmore to see PS I Love You co-headlining with Diamond Rings.

This Week In Music: You may already know since they did the VIA Indie playlist this week but Friday is the Portage and Main CD Release Party at the Anza Club (get your ticket ASAP, word is they’re going quickly). Saturday is another edition of West Coast Pop at the Red Room, this time with Eric Solomon, Guilty About Girls and Tara Lett. Lastly, Monday is the BCIT radio station Birthday Bash at the Biltmore featuring Henry and the Nightcrawlers, David Vertesi and Redbird.

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music Vol. 43 ft. Young Liars; Colleen Rennison with John Sponarski, Colin Cowan, and Amrit Basi; Owen Pallett; Brasstronaut; Japanese Girls and 41st & Home

March 8, 2011
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. We interview some of our favourite local artists, post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in Music’ highlights some of the concerts happening around the city…

Hey everyone! I’m baaaaack. While Christine is off on tour (I hope you’re keeping up with their adventures on the tour blog) I’m once again filling in to keep you all up to date on what’s happening in the Vancouver indie music scene.

Last week was a busy one. I saw Young Liars at their CD release show at Fortune Soundclub, heard some improvised music from Colleen Rennison with John Sponarski (Portage & Main, Redbird), Colin Cowan (Dan Mangan, Analog Bell Service) and Amrit Basi at Guilt & Co. I watched Owen Pallett make amazing music all by himself with only a violin and a keyboard, and then danced in my seat to Brasstronaut. Lastly, I saw a band I hadn’t seen before, Japanese Girls, along with an old favourite, 41st & Home as part of the the West Coast Pop concert series.

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC: It’s another busy one, folks. Tuesday: I’ll be at Fashion’s Night Out, a runway show and fundraiser for Out in Schools. Thursday: Green Couch Sessions celebrates Canadian Music Week with a live shoot featuring Henry & The Nightcrawlers. Friday: Diamond Rings shares the stage with PS I Love You at the Biltmore. Saturday: if you’re not heading to the West Coast Pop show at the Red Room, featuring Kyprios and Run With The Heard, you should check out Miranda Martini and friends at Cafe Montmarte, where you can catch the elusive Tyler Morgenstern. If you miss that, you can catch him again on Sunday at Launch Party for Trevor Loke with Anthropology of Love at the Railway Club .

Peak Performance Showcase #5

October 12, 2010

The final Peak Performance Showcase was held last Thursday at the Red Room and featured Greg Sczebel, YUCA, Kuba Oms and Kyprios. Having now see all the bands perform I do not envy the judges their jobs. Every band put on a great performance and I’m just glad I got to be a part of it all.

Voting has started so get over to The Peak Performance Project website and vote for your favourite band! Remember that you can only vote once so use your vote wisely. Polls will close at midnight on October 18th so don’t think for too long!

Peak Performance Project: Showcase #4

October 4, 2010

The penultimate night of the Peak Performance Project featured Steph Macpherson, Christopher Arruda, Behind Sapphire and Said the Whale (as well as some very messy surprise stage effects).

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music Vol. 26 ft The Dudes, Ghostkeeper, Chad VanGaalen, Yukon Blonde, and The Wooden Sky

September 28, 2010
sceneandheard
SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in
Vancouver.

We interview some of our favourite local artists, and ‘Last Week in
Music’ highlights some of the concerts happening around the city.

This week I finally got to see the Dudes after missing them at LIVE at Squamish (to be fair, they put them on at the same time as Hollerado), and they rocked the SFU Woodwards campus despite the drizzly weather. Later that night (after Rain City Chronicles) I booked it over to the Rickshaw to see Ghostkeeper and Chad VanGaalen (a show mysteriously full of that new hybrid the “indie bro”). On Saturday I caught one of my favourite Vancouver bands, Yukon Blonde, who were starting their tour with The Wooden Sky. If you haven’t heard either of them, I recommend checking them out.

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC: This week I don’t have a whole lot on the docket. School is kicking into high gear and I’ve got to catch up on the ol’ reading. I probably won’t be getting to much else than the fourth Peak Performance Showcase. Christine will be back on Saturday, so soon we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled programming. It’s been fun, kids! If you see me out at shows, feel free to say hi!
