The Bear Pit Hibernators

August 19, 2010

The environmentally friendly installation Hibernators by Shirley Wiebe at the old Polar bear pit in Stanley Park is almost gone. The empty bear enclosure is a great piece of 60s architecture with bold shapes. Looking like it would be a fun set for a horror movie with its abandoned nature.

The bio bears have decomposed so much you can’t tell what they were.

Park & Tilford Gardens

August 9, 2010

Hidden away in the corner of the Park & Tilford shopping complex in North Vancouver is the Park & Tilford Gardens with eight themes to explore. Great place to get a rest from getting groceries or just wait for the next 3-D blockbuster to start.

A mix of gardens to check out and one the best has a bridge with some koi fish.

Andrew Pommier’s window to originality

July 13, 2010

Andrew Pommier always seems to have a bunch of stuff on the go and it is great to see some locally. He has some storefronts at various skate and surf shops across Canada and right now Second Wave over in North Van has one up. Nice treat to see.

You can take a rest while making your way up Lonsdale and take a peek at Andrew’s work.

All British Field Meet

May 24, 2010

This last Saturday, May 22, the VanDusen Botanical Garden hosted the All British Field Meet of cars, trucks and motorcycles. The rains stayed away just in time for the event on the grass. The design, graphics, logos and colors of the vehicles were great to see in the park environment.

All the cars could be looked at closely and some people were even able to sit inside of them if they were friendly with the owners.

Sea Village Houseboats

May 17, 2010

There seems to be a few places in the lower mainland where you can live in a house on the water. Kind of what Relic (from the Beachcombers) lived in, but a bit more modern and less dilapitated. The highest profile group of houseboats is Sea Village on Granville Island. Their view of the Gray Whale must of have been amazing.

Thousands of people are constantly roaming by so I don’t think the houseboat people expect much privacy.

MacLeod’s Books

May 4, 2010

After Bob made a mention of MacLeod’s (455 Pender Street West) I thought I’d dig though some of the pics I have of this treasure trove of books.

There are always a great selection of books in the window, but it doesn’t even compare to the jems hidden inside.

ICOGRADA DESIGN WEEK (Thur)

April 30, 2010

Thursday was the final full day of Design Week Vancouver at Canada Place. The topics of discussion ranged from The Cultural Value of Art in Design to Global Design Procurement… so a bit of everything. Eyjafjallajokull (the volcano in Iceland) caused David Lancashire to send his presentation over the internet. The conference officially closed last night but there are still special events going on around the city. Today’s main one is an Education Roundtable (1 to 5) and Grad show preview (6 to 9) at Emily Carr.

Once again the rain stayed away and the sun poked its head out to give slices of sunlight for the conference participants.

Many more sketches and photos to see!
