All British Field Meet

May 24, 2010

This last Saturday, May 22, the VanDusen Botanical Garden hosted the All British Field Meet of cars, trucks and motorcycles. The rains stayed away just in time for the event on the grass. The design, graphics, logos and colors of the vehicles were great to see in the park environment.

All the cars could be looked at closely and some people were even able to sit inside of them if they were friendly with the owners.

Sea Village Houseboats

May 17, 2010

There seems to be a few places in the lower mainland where you can live in a house on the water. Kind of what Relic (from the Beachcombers) lived in, but a bit more modern and less dilapitated. The highest profile group of houseboats is Sea Village on Granville Island. Their view of the Gray Whale must of have been amazing.

Thousands of people are constantly roaming by so I don’t think the houseboat people expect much privacy.

MacLeod’s Books

May 4, 2010

After Bob made a mention of MacLeod’s (455 Pender Street West) I thought I’d dig though some of the pics I have of this treasure trove of books.

There are always a great selection of books in the window, but it doesn’t even compare to the jems hidden inside.

ICOGRADA DESIGN WEEK (Thur)

April 30, 2010

Thursday was the final full day of Design Week Vancouver at Canada Place. The topics of discussion ranged from The Cultural Value of Art in Design to Global Design Procurement… so a bit of everything. Eyjafjallajokull (the volcano in Iceland) caused David Lancashire to send his presentation over the internet. The conference officially closed last night but there are still special events going on around the city. Today’s main one is an Education Roundtable (1 to 5) and Grad show preview (6 to 9) at Emily Carr.

Once again the rain stayed away and the sun poked its head out to give slices of sunlight for the conference participants.

Many more sketches and photos to see!

ICOGRADA DESIGN WEEK (Wed)

April 29, 2010

Wednesdays’ full day of Icograda‘s Design Week Vancouver had many speakers from around the world, and even one having to skype in from Kenya because of the Icelandic volcano affecting his flights. Change is happening in the world and in design especially and designers are trying to figure out how they can add value to visual communication and how the world, in turn values the work designers do. Today there is another day of speakers including Marian Bantjes, a “near” Vancouver typographer, illustrator and educator who will talk on The Cultural Value of Art in Design. Should be amazing.

The rain stayed at bay for the day but provided an amazing view from Canada place for all the locals and international visitors to Vancouver.

There are ton more photos to see!

ICOGRADA DESIGN WEEK (Keynote Speeches)

April 28, 2010

Design Week Vancouver is rolling along and last night’s keynote speeches were by Helen Walters, Cameron Sinclair and Don Ryun Chang. The main theme of all three speakers was; “How does design create value and how do we value design?” The bulk of the conference is happening today and Thursday with full days of discussions and talks like “If it Works in India…” by Ashwini Deshpande. If you are current student this is a great opportunity to get informed on global design issues before doing the jump into the work force.

The conference is being held in the always classic Canada Place and the keynote talk started just as the sun was setting.

IDEA 2010 GRAD SHOW OPENING

April 27, 2010

The opening of Capilano University’s IDEA program grad show was last night and there were a lot of eager young graduates ready to take on the world of illustration and design. There was a mix of concepts and visuals and no one student had the same way of creating a solution to a design problem. The show is up at Harbour Centre until April 30. It is running concurrently as a special event for ICOGRADA’s Design Week Vancouver.

The Grad show is at 555 West Hastings, just as you go down the escalator to get up to The Lookout.
