DuoTone in GIANTS IV: Music is the Spiciness in Life

February 14, 2012

Do you ever pretend the music blasting through your headphones is the soundtrack to your life? It’s amazing how some simple rythyms and melodies transform the most mundane parts of life into moments of triumphant heroism or soul-crushing melodrama. Slicing carrots? Throw on the Rocky Soundtrack and you are slicing those carrots AGAINTS ALL ODDS! Walking a dog? Add a little Beethovan’s Moonlight Sonata (1st Movement) and you are walking that dog to cure yourself of TRAGIC HEARTBREAK!

Chris Casillan and Jeff Gladstone are masters of mood. Together they are DuoTone. Thier medium of choice is improv comedy…with a twist. By adding music to thier scenes — with guitars, voices or whatever intsrument is on hand — they crank up the emotional intensity to eleven. Lucky for us, they are also masters of comedy, molding thier improv/music hybrid into a two-man laugh machine. Some say that music is the spice of life and I’m prone to agree, especially if your partial to spices like angst, passion or tumeric.

In this video, produced by Weekend Leisure and GIANTS Comedy, Chris Casillan, one-half of DuoTone, stars opposite medieval comedians Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan. It’s the latest in a series of videos leading up to a comedy show of epic proportions.

GIANTS IV: EPIC SEX ED is at The Cultch for one night only on Saturday, February 18th. In addition to DuoTone and Cam Macleod/Colin Cowan, the show also features Dave Shumka, Sean Devlin, and Ivan Decker, as well brand new video from Weekend Leisure and more!

GIANTS IV: EPIC SEX ED – February 18th at 10:00pm

Location: The Vancity Culture Lab – 1895 Venables Street

Tickets: Only $10. Advance tickets available online at The Cultch.

Sean Devlin in GIANTS IV: Less is More

February 10, 2012

Sean Devlin is a comedian, activist and a master of getting more out of less. He takes simple ideas and distills them into their purest, most powerful forms. Lucky for all of us, his ideas are usually hilarious, resulting in refreshingly lean comedy. That’s what he did during last spring’s election when, as one of the creative forces behind shitharperdid.ca, he made waves with simple, yet poignant jabs at our commander and chief. With over four million web hits in only 72 hours, Devlin proved that the combination of simple and hilarious goes a long way.

As a stand up comedian, Devlin practices the same philosophy. With just his soft-spoken voice, unassuming demeanour and pregnant pauses, he soon has audiences in crippling fits of laughter. Sean Devlin says more with a monotone whisper than most do with a thousand megaphones. Seeing him live, you’ll see why he belongs in the great tradition of minimalist comedians like Tig Notaro.

It’s fitting that Sean Devlin plays a subdued future teller in the latest instalment of “The Quest for the Holy Tail” (link), produced by Weekend Leisure and GIANTS Comedy. Cast opposite Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan, Devlin’s trademark less-is-more humour is in full form. These three comedians will be performing in GIANTS IV: EPIC SEX ED, a comedy show for the ages at The Cultch on Saturday, February 18th. In addition to Sean Devlin, Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan, this one-night-only show also features Dave Shumka, Ivan Decker, and DuoTone, as well brand new video from Weekend Leisure and more!

Ivan Decker: Leaf-Hand, Fish-Hand, GIANTS IV

February 7, 2012

One of his hand is a fish. The other is a leaf. But Vancouver comedian Ivan Decker doesn’t let his his lack of opposable digits keep him from making people laugh. High-fives are a little awkward and he has a harder time holding onto a microphone. And sure, not everyone is able to relate to his whole “don’t you hate it when your leaf hand wilts” bit, but Ivan Decker doesn’t let it keep him down.  In fact, he credits his weird hands as the reason he got into comedy in the first place.

Ivan Decker has been steadily building a devoted following in Vancouver through his tireless work on the stand-up comedy circuit. Known for his accessible observational humour and charming musings about life as a Vancoverite, Decker is a is like a scrappy boxer in the funny ring. He’ll hit you with a quick one-two fish-leaf combo and you’ll be screaming for more.

In this video, produced by Weekend Leisure and GIANTS Comedy, Ivan “Float Like a Fish, Sting Like a Leaf” Decker is cast opposite Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan. It’s the second edition in a new video mini-series entitled ‘The Quest for the Holy Tail’. It all leads up to the fourth instalment of GIANTS Comedy, an ongoing series of big-thinking comedy projects at The Cultch.

GIANTS IV: EPIC SEX ED is at The Cultch for one night only on Saturday, February 18th. In addition to Ivan Decker, Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan, the show also features Dave Shumka, Sean Devlin, and DuoTone, as well brand new video from Weekend Leisure and more!

Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan in GIANTS IV: EPIC SEX ED

February 4, 2012

Traveling with your best friend is lots of fun. Time-traveling with your best friend is even better. And when your best friend just happen’s to be wizard who’s smooth with the ladies, needless to say, it’s going to be an epic trip. On February 18th, Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan will join forces for GIANTS IV: EPIC SEX ED, an epic comedy adventure for the ages. Following a time-travel, medieval sex education team, EPIC SEX ED challenges Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail by way of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Cam Macleod and Colin Cowan are no strangers to the Vancouver arts and culture scene. Macleod is the star of the upcoming the feature length action film Steel Viper Force and the man behind some of the most exciting comedy events in the city, like last fall’s roast of Mayor Gregor Robertson. Cowan is comedian and musician extraordinaire, playing with groups like Analog Bell Service and backing up local favourite Dan Mangan.

GIANTS IV: EPIC SEX ED is at The Cultch for one night only on Saturday, February 18th. The show also features Dave Shumka, Sean Devlin, Ivan Decker and DuoTone, as well brand new video from Weekend Leisure, and more!

GIANTS III: Charles Demers Makes Me Laugh

January 13, 2012

I’m going to be honest. I don’t like to laugh. The act of it disgusts me. Mouths agape, chests contracting, weird faces. I prefer crying. I always have.

So imagine how I feel about Charlie Demers, one of the “funniest” “men” in “town”. Hearing the uproars that follow him show to show suggest he may be the city’s main cause of laughter. Instead of treating him as patient one (and cutting mirth off at the source), we herald him with success! From headlining Just For Laughs, to being a reoccurring guest on CBC’s Debaters, Charlie is becoming a plague to those of us who hate to feel joy. I accidentally met him the other day, and had to stab my own hand to prevent joining the unwashed masses of laughers who would enjoy his wealth of charm. See for yourself below why he (and don’t get me started on mad man Ryan Beil) needs to be stopped before he can enchant another innocent:

If you would like to protest his excellence, he will next be seen at tomorrow’s GIANTS III: Self Quest by Ryan Beil. I will be on hand for the 10pm show with cardboard and dull coloured markers to begin the occupation. We will have to buy tickets though, which you can do here.

GIANTS III January 14th @10pm

Location: The Vancity Culture Lab – 1895 Venables Street

Tickets: Only $10. Advance tickets at www.giantscomedy.com with some tickets available at the door.

GIANTS III: Adam Pateman, man of pate

January 10, 2012

Pate may refer to:

  • Pate (musical instrument), a Samoan percussion instrument
  • Pâté, a type of meat paste, terrine or pie
  • Pate, pâte, or paste, a term for the interior body (non-rind portion) of cheese, described by its texture, density, and color
  • Pate, The human head, and what is within.
  • Pateman , Adam (funny person), a Canadian comedian whose combination of the anecdotal and self-deprecating humour has led to success locally and in the international market.   Known also for playing the pate with a mouth full of Pâté while others enjoy the pâte he serves with fresh bread.

At 2 years old, comedian Adam Pateman asked his mother ‘what the deal’ was with his baby food.  It took years for his mother to realize how gifted her boy really was, and he often opens with that that joke and other strong baby food material as a tribute to her.

Since those early days as a wunderkind Adam has gone on to win Vancouver’s People Choice Comedy award, star in his own Comedy Now special, and appear all over your T.V in different ways.  We recently found footage from his work with legendary actor Ryan Beil, and have the exclusive privilege to share the never before released tape:

This Saturday, child genius Adam Pateman and adult marvel Ryan Beil will be reunited again at GIANTS III: Self Quest by Ryan Beil.  The show also features performances from Charlie Demers, The Ryan Steele and Amy Goodmurphy Show, Fancy Pants, and of course the Brigadoon-esque performance of Self Quest, a play written by and starring Jessie Award winning actor/comedian Ryan Beil (when he was a nimble and sprite 16 years old).

GIANTS III January 14th @10pm

Location: The Vancity Culture Lab – 1895 Venables Street

Tickets: Only $10.  Advance tickets at www.giantscomedy.com with some tickets available at the door.
