There’s a good wind a’brewin in Canuck land!

September 3, 2009

Seems like summer means nothing to the Canucks… it’s been a busy week for sure…
Heck… I go away for a few days… and whammo… it’s open season on filling in the blanks on our roster.
First, we got Christian Ehrhoff, Mathieu Schneider and Brad Lukowich… 3 D’s who can hopefully prevent that major brain fart that happened in the Chicago series (don’t throw the motherf#$!’ng puck up the middle of the ice!!!!) then we sign Luongo for ever… for EVER!!!
Thats a great couple of days!

I for one would like to welcome the new Canucks additions!
I can’t wait for the hockey season!!!!
Who’s with me!

The pipe world by RJ Clarke, Tobacconist

August 31, 2009

Smoking is bad… we all know that… but sometimes, a well timed pipe or cigar is a welcome addition to a great day.

I first went to RJ Clarke Tobacconist about 8 years ago. I was on the hunt for a pipe tobacco that I’d been looking for for years.
Like stepping back in time… going into the shop was like entering another world. The Gastown location had been a Vancouver tradition for years. I felt like I was in 1800′s England. Inside, it was dark but wasn’t intimidating, fragrant but not overpowering. The owner was friendly and informative, and I left with a smile on my face.
About a year later, I went down to Gastown to do some shopping, but the shop was closed. I was decimated… Thankfully, a few months later, the new shop opened up on Cambie street across from Oakridge… I was happy again.

If you’re ever in the market for pipes, tobacco or cigars (smoking is bad… remember!), RJ Clarke is definitely worth the check out, and
is located at 5844 Cambie street.

skimming on a hot day!

August 20, 2009

Seems like some Van skimmers made the Vancouver Sun today, both in the paper and on the Sun’s video page…

Habitat 76

August 19, 2009

I found this little nugget the other day, and it made me stoked.
In 1976, Vancouver hosted the UN Habitat Conference on Human Settlements, all about urban settlement issues.
Vancouver’s own Arthur Erickson designed this paper based pavilion, which was located in front of the Art Gallery.

“The pavilion’s roof is a set of hyperbolic paraboloids created with paper-mache. Sections of the roof were created by about two thousand Lower Mainland children, who paper-mached over the molds in the factory and later painted designs onto the cured skin.”

Paper pavilions… now that is awesome!

blueberries a plenty!

August 13, 2009

This is how dumb I am: I had no idea that Richmond was awash in blueberries. I always thought that they were a Fraser Valley thing, leaving Richmond for cranberries… boy was I ever wrong.

Hastings Caballerial!

August 12, 2009

It’s not every day that you nail your first caballerial… But my friend Howard Redekopp finally nailed one, and I’m so stoked that I’m sharing it with all of you!

block parties for everyone!

August 11, 2009

blk3

A little known and awesome thing about the City of Vancouver, is that the city actually encourages neighborhood block parties. On your street! It doesn’t cost a thing… they provide the barriers, and it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and hang out on your street with a beer in tow without worrying about getting hit by a car…

“Whatever the motive, block parties often lead to further gatherings of neighbours and may lead to neighbourhood improvements such as a crosswalk, new playground equipment, or a neighbourhood clean up campaign.

One does not have to live in a district of single family homes to be involved in a block party. Block parties can happen in common spaces in townhouse complexes, in front of apartment buildings or in a park near a condominium. A block party is simply a group of neighbours working together to organize an event for their neighbourhood.”
