|If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled “cheap” and the other labeled “awesome”, the middle point where they cross over could be labeled “Vancouver on the Cheap”. In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.Got a cheap-living tip you’d like to share? And now, for the first time ever for Vancouver on the Cheap, a guest post! This round up of cheap beach eats is contributed by the good folks at Chowmenow, a website specializing in $5 meals in Vancouver.
Vancouver comes alive during the summer. It’s those few months we can toss our umbrellas, strip down to barely-there outfits and show off our pale and pasty skin. When the only things that seem to matter are patios, people with boats, and maximum hours spent at the beach.
Long days and short nights means that the last thing we want to do is stay at home. While we’re more than happy to finally rock those abs we’ve worked so hard for in cross-fit and soak in every ounce of damaging UV rays possible, there’s a bit of a downside: we’re always eating out. So to avoid becoming an actual beach bum, Chowmenow has gathered some cheap eats that won’t cost you more than five bucks.
Okay fine, we were lying about the abs.
To see, be seen, and be on the scene, it’s all about Kits Beach. On weekends it’s packed from end to end, so there will be plenty of people watching to keep you occupied. Luckily the same rings true for cheap eats. After a full-shift of bronzing, just a few steps away is Hapa Izakaya. From 4pm and 5pm is Hapa Hour, which means you can score beef tataki, ebi mayo, and chicken karaage for under a fiver.
