Canadian Design Resource Week 9: LOOK!

May 15, 2013

Each week we sift through the nearly 8,000 entries that our friends at the Canadian Design Resource have made since 2005, selecting one particularly awesome Vancouver-centric design that they’ve featured and sharing it with you here.

Design: Unknown
Client: City of Vancouver
Date: 2010

In time for the 2010 Olympics and presumably for all the visitors from abroad, the city had these polite reminders to look in the direction of traffic to avoid walking into it unwittingly. More than two years later, this street paint has worn considerably, but is a reminder of our efforts to extend a warm and safe welcome to a mass of foreign travellers.

Letter of the Week: V.I.A. readers answer the call for local designers!

May 13, 2013

Dear Bob [editor of V.I.A.],

I want to thank you and the readers of V.I.A. for helping to find a home for our BC-made bench. We received numerous e-mails within days of the POST from both people suggesting places they know of, and others with space to offer. We were looking for a space to house our bench until the IDSWest show in September, and the person we got linked up with offered a compatible timeframe.

The man for the job was Mark Brand, then preparing to open No.1 Noodle House, a pop-up restaurant in the old Boneta space at #1 West Cordova. Currently the concept for the Noodle House is a seven month pop-up shop. In addition to providing the bench with a home, Mark has reserved space beside the bench for us to promote the product and our business. This is about people helping people and opening the door to opportunity.

For the next location and potential final home, we really wanted to see the bench in a open environment with lots of light and space around it. I got an e-mail from Jodie Braaten, exhibit designer at Science World, with an attached photo of the prospective space.

Canadian Design Resource Week 8: Chambar Ale Packaging

May 7, 2013

Each week we sift through the nearly 8,000 entries that our friends at the Canadian Design Resource have made since 2005, selecting one particularly awesome Vancouver-centric design that they’ve featured and sharing it with you here.

Design: Glasfurd & Walker
Client: Chambar Restaurant
Date: 2009

“Chambar Ale is the first of a new range of Belgian style beers produced by renowned Vancouver restaurant, Chambar. With a character that embodies the restaurant’s motto of ‘Civilized Debauchery’, Chambar Ale was crafted for pairing with great food and good friends. It’s a beer for those who love life’s finer things; a beer for the connoisseur. With this in mind, the label design and production was critical to the beer’s positioning. The bespoke label is screen printed in 22ct gold, precious metal ink onto amber glass.”

The winning #inthevillage t-shirt design!

May 1, 2013
The Village on False Creek Welcome to In The Village on False Creek, a unique project inspired by Live@YVR and 365 Days of Dining. I’ve moved my family into this community with my mission being to showcase the myriad of things that make it awesome by bringing you a weekly scoop!

On April 4th we ANNOUNCED ten local designers that we commissioned to design #inthevilage inspired t-shirts, then we allowed a couple weeks for you to VOTE ON THEM. Yesterday the top 3 were finalized based on a vote tally! They were Melanie Kimmett‘s, Helen Eady‘s and Kim Ridgewell/Leah Gregg‘s, all shown below.

As promised the jury of myself, Bob Rennie and our recently-announced third judge, former Mayor of Vancouver Larry Campbell (!!!), put our heads together and picked a t-shirt design that we collectively felt best represented the awesomeness of the Village on False Creek. It took some deliberating and was a tough choice to make but in the end we landed on…
