Vancouver Is Awesome, and we are dedicated to everything that makes it that way.

If you want to read ugly, bad news about this beautiful city of ours, you’re going to have to look to traditional media and other blogs; V.I.A. promotes everything that makes our city awesome, from old to new and everything inbetween. Dinner With… Fred Penner at The Bottleneck

June 7, 2012
DINNER WITH… pairs interesting Vancouverites with top notch restaurants. We want to showcase the minds and menus of some of our favourite people and establishments. We’ll pick their brains, while they devour their dinner, and hopefully YOU will come away inspired, enlightened and hungry…

It’s a very special post this week because I had:

DINNER WITH… FRED PENNER!

So far we’ve stuck to our editors for these Dinner With… posts, but no one passes up a chance for dinner with Fred Penner!

The lovely people at The Bottleneck (which is tucked in between The Commodore and Cafe Crepe on Granville street) set up our meeting, fed us some amazing food, and provided the backdrop for some fun photos. Thanks to them…and to Fred, whom you’re about to learn a little more about…

I heard that Fred splits his time between Winnipeg and Vancouver (though Winnipeg is home) and I was excited to find out why! Apparently the show was filmed in both locations, and actually the opening shot of the intro to Fred Penner’s place? Spanish Banks!:

Dinner With… Brice Ferre at West

April 27, 2012
DINNER WITH… pairs interesting Vancouverites with top notch restaurants. We want to showcase the minds and menus of some of our favourite people and establishments. We’ll pick their brains, while they devour their dinner, and hopefully YOU will come away inspired, enlightened and hungry…

And we’re back! And it’s a…

DINNER WITH… BRICE FERRE!

Brice is another one of VIA’s talented photographers – shooting for our LOVE is a Four Letter Word series, as well as some of the Vancouver’s Most Awesome posts. And funny enough he and his wonderful lady were subjects in the LOVE series, (which I photographed) so this was not our first meeting!

Brice and I have been trying to have this dinner at West in our shared neighbourhood (South Granville) for a LONG time, and it finally happened. Let me tell you, it was worth the wait. Everything from the staff to the food was perfect…and in fact we spent FIVE HOURS there. Bliss…

I’m always afraid I’ll fill up on bread, but these warm housemade buns were too amazing to pass up.

Dinner With… Sarah Szloboda at Dockside

November 10, 2011
DINNER WITH… pairs interesting Vancouverites with top notch restaurants. We want to showcase the minds and menus of some of our favourite people and establishments. We’ll pick their brains, while they devour their dinner, and hopefully YOU will come away inspired, enlightened and hungry…

Dinner With…is back! It was a busy end of summer and start to fall but I got hungry so I scheduled myself…

DINNER WITH… SARAH SZLOBODA!

Sarah is our VIA Theatre Editor aka Cue To Cue, and an actress and director herself! In fact she artistic directs GIANTS comedy, and the next show is Nov 26th.

Anyways, I actually met Sarah a few hours before dinner as we participated in an Amazing-Race-esque photo-scavenger hunt (with Anne, whose “Dinner With…” you can see here).
So it was nice to sit down in the warm and delicious environment that is Dockside (at the Granville Island Hotel).

Dockside has an in-house brewery with some AMAZING beers. I had my favourite, the Johnson Pilsner.

In the past I’ve had interviewees who were keen on sharing appies, and in this case …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

Dinner With… Erin Shaw at The Sandbar

August 25, 2011
DINNER WITH… pairs interesting Vancouverites with top notch restaurants. We want to showcase the minds and menus of some of our favourite people and establishments.

We’ll pick their brains, while they devour their dinner, and hopefully YOU will come away inspired, enlightened and hungry…

Welcome back to Dinner With…I’ve been loving the weather in the city and thought I should take another one of our fabulous editors out to dinner to enjoy it so I had…

DINNER WITH… ERIN SHAW!

Erin is our editor of the The Pop-In, and you may already know her face from Shaw TV, as she is on The Express…covering feel good stories about Vancouver. Sound familiar?

I fell in love with her instantly when she made a halibut pun (“I might go for the halibut..just for the halibut!”) and her red hair and saucy personality reminded me of Christina Hendricks.

We sat down for a delightful dinner at Sandbar on Granville Island, and I was excited to have another date that liked to share…but first CHECK OUT THE VIEW:

Not too shabby eh?

The Sandbar has some excellent cocktails. This is the Cucumber Margarita and it’s as great as it sounds. Also recommend …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

Dinner With… Anne Cottingham at the Tea House at Stanley Park

August 4, 2011
DINNER WITH… pairs interesting Vancouverites with top notch restaurants. We want to showcase the minds and menus of some of our favourite people and establishments.

We’ll pick their brains, while they devour their dinner, and hopefully YOU will come away inspired, enlightened and hungry…

Welcome back to Dinner With…summer is finally here, so I jumped on the opportunity to sit on a patio and have my…

DINNER WITH… ANNE COTTINGHAM!

Anne is VIA’s Visual Arts editor whose column is (as its description says) all about introducing the fascinating, quirky and wonderful people working in and around the visual arts in Vancouver. You know she’s qualified as her job is an arts administrator here in Vancouver and she’s qualified for a Dinner With… as she’s one of Vancity’s awesome human beings.

As I mentioned, summer is here and we made our way out to the patio at the Tea House at Stanley Park for an evening of excellent food.

We were first presented with a crab salad with a tarragon velouté sauce to wet our palates and get us hungry. Which is exactly what happened…

Next we perused the menu and placed our orders, opting to …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

Dinner With… Arlo at Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co.

July 21, 2011
DINNER WITH… pairs interesting Vancouverites with top notch restaurants. We want to showcase the minds and menus of some of our favourite people and establishments.

We’ll pick their brains, while they devour their dinner, and hopefully YOU will come away inspired, enlightened and hungry…

Back with another Dinner With…and this time I got to take out the cutest blogger here at VIA. May I present my…

DINNER WITH… ARLO!

Arlo is VIA’s youngest blogger and pretty much the coolest kid ever. I took him and Bob to one of Arlo’s favourite restaurants, Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co., at their brand new location on Main Street.
As a special treat, Arlo got to make his own pizza, which kids can do at their locations on Sunday and Monday nights!

RMFC is super kid-friendly, they have colouring sheets (which I ended up colouring in under Arlo’s direction) and …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>
