Van City Kitty: Meet Montgomery!

June 19, 2013

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Monty, submitted by VIA reader : Kayla Buchanan!

Name: Montgomery (AKA Monty / Mr. Bitey)
…
Breed/Colouring: Seal Lynx Point & Domestic Short Hair mix
…
Hood: East Van
…

Habits: Snoozing; playing fetch; chasing his little sister around the house and body slamming her; luring vistors in with leg rubs and then hissing, clawing and sometimes biting when they try to pet him; eating.

Hangouts: Monty loves to be on the lower level of the scratchy post, inside an ikea bag at the back of the closet, the litter box (constantly rearranging,) on your keyboard when you’re trying to type.

Favorite Things: Playing fetch with hair ties, licking plastic bags, stealing q-tips, attacking everyone but his parents, staring at you for an uncomfortable amount of time, slamming cupboards when he wants food, watching you in the bathroom, and drinking tap water.

Other Info: When Kayla adopted Monty he was 6 weeks old and under 6lbs. Now, 3 years later, he’s nearing house-panther status at 25lbs!  Don’t let his size and tendency to bite fool you though; he loves to cuddle, has a delicate, high-pitched meow and smooshes himself under the bed (he has to go under on his side) at any loud noise.

Mr. Bitey being chauffeured around by his manservant:

Van City Kitty: Meet Tobey Starks!

June 12, 2013

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Tobey Starks, submitted by VIA reader : Alex Kennedy!

Name: Tobey Starks (aka Ghostface Kitty, Intern Tobey, Tobey Dick, Tobey Wan Kenobi, Vincent Van Tobes and The Boy.)
…
Breed/Colouring: Black with a wispy, white-flecked undercoat which he refuses access to for the purposes of brushing.
…
Hood: Davie Village, although he is indefinitely grounded and cannot leave his apartment due to an unspecified incident.
…

Habits: Grooming his father’s facial hair with his tongue,  depositing unwanted toys into his water dish to signal his displeasure with them, licking condensation off windows and occasionally the toilet tank, recording his “mixtape” (mostly just him meowing loudly and incessantly while instrumental hip hop plays on the stereo) and eating hair while it is still attached to people’s heads.

Hangouts: Tobey will often lie in wait by the door so he can run out into the hallway when his father comes home from work, only to stop short after going five feet, turn around and run back inside. He also enjoys sitting behind closed curtains and reaching out to paw at people who pass by through said curtains. He can also be found behind the sofa where he can reach up through a split in the back to play a game Alex likes to call “The Phantom Claw.”
…
Favorite Things: Cold running water first and foremost. Secondly rap music, the more cartoonishly thuggish the better.

Other Info: When Tobey was first seen on the VOKRA website, the word used to describe him was “rambunctious.” This has proven to be true, as Tobey enjoys horseplay and rough housing, and occasionally even some tomfoolery. Like so many outwardly tough boys, he is actually very sweet and loves to meet people and introduce them to his favourite games, like “Pearl Harbour Tummy Rub” and “Underfoot.” His namesake is rapper Ghostface Killah, we’d like to think it’s where his swagger comes from.
Tobey is a highly accomplished kitty and has a regular column in the VOKRA Mewsletter and is an intern at the industrial music website, I Die:You Die.

Tobey got a little decadent at his last birthday party. A quick search uncovered this telling instagram:

Van City Kitty: Meet Asterix Le Fluff!

June 7, 2013

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Sorry for the delay, kitty friends! I know we usually have a Van City Kitty post on Wednesday, and I do hope you were able to hold out until today. I promise to tweet a bunch of kitties (@VanCityKittyVIA) this weekend, even if they are just my own to make up for the lack of cat awesomeness during the week.

Here are the deets on Asti, submitted by VIA reader : James!

Name: Asterix Le Fluff or “Asti” to her friends
…
Breed/Colouring: Calico
…
Hood: West End/Davie Village
…

Habits: Snuggles, sleeping, drinking from the bathtub and other cute things to distract from all of her trouble-making! Asti is suspected of nefarious drug dealings (without consent of her owners, mind you) including involvement in a local catnip ring that delivers the nip right to other cats’ windows.

Hangouts: The couch, the bed, and the alley on weekdays. Asti prefers to unwind at Oasis and the Pumpjack on weekends.

Favorite Things: “None of your buisiness” says Asti! James, who has authority to speak for Asti, has confirmed that she likes plastic, Starbucks oat-bars, blueberries, and jumping.

Other Info:

Asti was born on the hard streets of Bella Coola and made it big in Vancity.  James rescued her through a caring partner and her neighbors;  he heard that there was a new litter of kittens who were born to a family who had no way to care for them and were considering the worst.  Asti is alive, happy, and healthy thanks to James, his partner, and a lovely network of residents.

This is her “none of your business” face.

Van City Kitty: Take Us Home! Meet Zeta and Sonny

May 29, 2013

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Every month we feature a few kitties who are looking for their forever home. Today we have two very different adoptable friends from Katie’s Place!

Katie’s Place is a volunteer-run no-kill animal shelter in Maple Ridge.

Two principals guide them: all life is valuable, and we are responsible for improving the quality of life for all those in our care. They make no judgment on whose life is worth rescuing; the sick, elderly and homely are as precious as the healthy, young and attractive. Katie’s Place started helping animals in January of 2001 and became a registered charity in 2005.

Katie’s Place funding comes entirely from donations, fundraising and applying for grants. The funds go directly to animal care. Less than 3% is spent on admin/maintenance (eg. phone, bank charges, insurance). They are entirely volunteer run.

Learn more about Katie’s Place here.

ZETA

Zeta is a gorgeous and independent lover who wears a glamorous scarf of white to match her little white toes on an otherwise black outfit.  She is calm, cool, and is much happier grooming herself than relying on your help. She enjoys being pet, and can be feisty when she is in the mood to play! Zeta would love a calm adult companion who will be patient with her and who will provide warm sun-soaked window sills and comfy pillows.

Will you grace Zeta with your presence?
Adopt Zeta HERE!

SONNY

Sonny is a chatty and personable guy who will ask about your day when you get home from work, and will always listen to your troubles.  Sonny used to have a best friend kitty (he plays well with others) who has sadly passed away, the two used to live out on the streets together for years surviving on hand-outs. He is now on his own,  cleaned up, confident,  and ready for a full-time job as your kitty companion!
(I’m told the above photograph was really hard to get; Sonny kept trying to head-but the camera for some love and cuddles!)

Would you like to be Sonny’s buddy??
Adopt Sonny HERE!

Van City Kitty: Meet Hershel!

May 22, 2013

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Hershal, submitted by VIA reader : Karen Rugamas!

Name: Hershel Layton (named after this guy!)
…
Breed/Colouring: A fluffy little mutt of grey, white, and tan
…
Hood: West End
…

Habits: Walking in front of people, sitting just out of arms reach, talking to himself, and untying shoe laces.

Hangouts: Windowsills, the edge of the bathtub (with people in it) and the kitchen cupboards.

Favorite Things: His “welcome to the neighborhood “ rainbow cat toy, his own tail, hummus and people-watching.

It isn’t easy being ridiculously good-looking. Here’s Hersh’s best “blue steel.”

Van City Kitty: Meet Gordon!

May 16, 2013

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Gordon, submitted by VIA reader : Christine J!

Name: Gordon. AKA: Mayor of Jerktown, Mista Lova Lova, “The Guy”
…
Breed/Colouring: A standard and perfect grey
…
Hood: West End
…

Habits: Gordon has very strict rules against privacy, and enforces compliance by headbutting open any closed doors as well as dashing to the apartment door to listen in on any hallway drama. He also enjoys kneading necks, chirping at birds and squirrels, knocking valuables off of any surface when he is hungry, and intensely staring at his people while they sleep. He occasionally will poop the bathtub, drool, and give morning snuggles. Possibly in that order.

Hangouts: The balcony, drawers, boxes, bags, window sills, and the cardboard boxes that mason jars come in.

Favorite Things: Belly zerberts, hide and seek, feathers, bottle caps, pens, and popping out of the laundry basket like a jack-in-the-box.   He most favorite is when the mail-person slides mail through the mail slot (this is most exciting!)

Least Favorite thing: Paper! He hates when Christine has to write papers.

Other Info: Gordon is 2.5 years old and has been a house kitty since birth. Often he can be seen sitting backwards on the kitchen chairs (a la AC Slater) like a “cool guy” and watching his people cook.

The cool guy himself:
