Van City Kitty: Expat Edition

December 26, 2010

A new kitty twice a week! Yup, we want YOUR cat photos and stories! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

In honour of those of you who may be traveling internationally this week, and also for my own American in-laws, I’m pleased to introduce Expat Van City Kitty Jazz! Formerly a Canadian Cat, Jazz now lives in Washington, DC with VIA reader Chris Yoh. Here’s what Chris had to say about Jazz:

Name: Jazz
Breed/Colouring: Tabby gray (uh, grey) with white boots.
Hood: Wash DC apartment
Habits: Destroying cardboard, wrestling hands and attacking crickets.
Hangouts: Bathtub, right next to the computer mouse, hardwood floor.
Other info: He is insane.

He’s apparently a Canadian cat, the shelter told me. So he’s pretty big on free healthcare, free booze, cheap meds and hockey ^^

Don’t know his story but am happy he’s here…never thought I’d get along with a cat so well.

Are you looking for a (or another) little furry beast to love? Please check out Happy Tails, our weekly segment featuring the BC SPCA and one of the animals they currently have available for adoption. (You may have noticed that many of the Van City Kitties came from the SPCA!) Check back every Saturday for a new Happy Tails segment!

And if you adopted your pet from the SPCA and would like to share your awesome story on Happy Tails, send an email to vancitykitty@vancouverisawesome.com or Rory.Blanchard@novusnow.ca.

Van City Kitty: True Meaning of Xmas Edition

December 22, 2010

A new kitty twice a week! Yup, we want YOUR cat photos and stories! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Hey friends. Today’s Van City Kitty, in honour of the season, is in the vein of “the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes that day.” I’m pleased to introduce you to very-special Lemon the Cat! I’ll let Lemon’s human, VIA reader Merrianne Couture, tell the story:

Name: Lemon
Breed/Colouring: Orange Tabby, with yellow, lemony eyes
Hood: Kits
Habits: Chewing his nails, sitting in front of a mirror, staring into space, playing with his assortment of toys and gifts from his growing number of fans. He’s very social and loves other cats and children (! — weird, but true).
Hangouts: On the couch, doorway, on my shoulder. We haven’t figured out a way to get him to perch at a window without disastrous consequences.
Other info: I’m new to Vancouver and in order to feel more at home, I  adopted Lemon  last summer when he was 7 months old. Lemon is a wobbler — he has cerebellar hypoplasia and his situation (though mercifully he doesn’t know the difference) makes it extremely difficult for him to walk. His version of CH is pretty intense as far as I can tell, though it won’t get worse and he’ll learn to use his weight to balance more effectively as he matures.

Despite this, Lemon manages to motor all over the apartment, but it can be a little tricky for him to navigate slippery floors, the couch and gawd help him: stairs (we don’t have any, so he has been spared this!) His mother was rescued by VOKRA when she was pregnant.

It took a bit longer for us to find Lemon, but we have and we’ve committed to the next 20 years of living with a special needs kitty. He just turned one on December 10.

He’s sweetness and inspires anyone with limitations — everyone can learn from Lemon the Cat.

Lemon has also been featured in a YouTube video, as Aquacat! He receivedhydro-therapy sessions in a pool to help exercise his legs while he was being fostered by VOKRA.

Van City Kitty: It’s Maybee!

December 15, 2010

A new kitty twice a week! Yup, we want YOUR cat photos and stories! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Today we have the cosmopolitan francofeline Maybee, sent by VIA readers Benedicte and Jerome. They say:

Here is our adorable kitty, Maybee. We got her a year ago from a family in North Van. We moved to Vancouver from France two years ago and once we realized we were going to stay here for a while, we decided to get the cat we always wanted. She is the best cat we ever had, so sweet, adorable and loving.

Name: Maybee
Nickname: Mamaow
Breed/Colouring: Not sure exactly… Maine Coon ?
Hood: Mount Pleasant
Habits: She loves to watch us when we’re cooking, crawl under the blankets to sleep against our bellies, and fight like crazy when we go to sleep with her housemate Indy, who arrived from France 2 months ago.
Hangouts: She loves to stay in front of the gate watching the neighbors and wait for the kids from the school nearby to cuddle her. She’s also always on the outdoor stairs of our neighbor, waiting for him to give her treats.
Other info: She has a funny nose with a big long hair at the very end of it, and a fluffy part above it. She talks a lot and answers to you if you start talking to her. But don’t speak to her in English, she only understands French !

Van City Kitty: Meet Nico!

December 12, 2010

A new kitty twice a week! Yup, we want YOUR cat photos and stories! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Today’s Rad Van City Kitty Nico was sent to us by VIA reader / Suitcase Gallery proprietor Robert Fougere. Here’s what Robert had to say about Nico:

Name: Nico
Breed/Colouring: Much like a tiger, only grey.
Hood: Oliver
Habits: She will only let you pet her when she wants to be pet, but there is a chance that if you pass out on the couch, you might wake up with her laying across your neck.
Hangouts: She is an apartment dweller.
Other info: The opposite of the runt of the litter. Very ferocious. Slightly cross-eyed.

Van City Kitty: Sophie

December 8, 2010

A new kitty twice a week! Yup, we want YOUR cat photos and stories! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Today’s Van City Kitty was sent to us by VIA reader Taylor DeJong. Here’s what Taylor had to say about Sophie:

Name: Sophie
Breed/Colouring: All white
Hood: Kitsilano
Habits: Following sun spots, dancing for butter, devising secret games, snuggling into herself, stealing seats, rabbit-kicking chair and table legs
Hangouts: Our bed, on the couch, in boxes, anywhere there is sunshine, the bathtub, under her blanket, in the laundry basket
Other info: Sophie also goes by the name “Birdaroo” because she likes to make bird sounds and sometimes looks like a kangaroo.  She loves to talk, and will often have a whole conversation with you.  She is very apt at using the tone of her voice to convey what she wants…and look out if it’s 6pm and she hasn’t had her supper yet!  She is the embodiment of unconditional love, and basically joy in cat form.  She loves life and her belly.
