Van City Kitty: Take Us Home this Halloween! Black Cat Edition.

October 31, 2012

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Every month we feature a few kitties who are looking for their forever home. This month we have a special Halloween Edition of some very sweet black kitties from VOKRA and Katie’s Place!

Happy Halloween!

It’s hard to believe by looking at the four beautiful cats below, but black cats have a drastically lower adoption rate than other coloured cats. Sadly, in shelters across Canada and all over the world this often means a high rate of euthanization; black cats are only unlucky if you happen to be one.

Whether because of outdated superstitions, or just the reality that they are much more difficult to photograph well, black cats are especially in need of loving homes and people or families to bond with.

If you are looking for a new addition to your family or a furry  companion who loves you just the way you are, consider one of these kitties, or one of many more in Vancouver shelters.

Both Katie’s Place and VOKRA are strictly no-kill shelters that are entirely volunteer run.

JULIETTE

Juliette seeks Romeo, but will gladly settle for anyone willing to provide a loving home. Juliette is a loving, trusting cat who was left behind by her family a couple of years ago. A neighbour had been feeding her, letting her in, and she had been sleeping on the bed, but they could no longer care for her and took her to a shelter. Her original family had been traced but didn’t want her back.

Juliette loves people, and misses having a person to call her own.  She must wonder why her family abandoned her and she found herself in shelter after shelter. Often, there aren’t enough loving moments to go around in the shelter, and so she awaits someone to love her as their very own.

HAMMOND

Hammond is a black guy with a beautiful chocolate ruff and highlights. He was trapped as a shy and scared stray so he’s a little scruffy right now, but he is friendly, attentive, and welcomes attention and petting. He may just steal your heart this Halloween after a few treats.

Adopt Hammond HERE

KARMA

Karma is a 5-month-old kitten who is all sweetness and spirit. She enjoys chasing everything from a rubber ball to a lazer pen to one of her siblings. She likes children and is fearless around other pets so would do very well in a family situation. Karma and one of her siblings would be a happy, delightful addition to a busy, loving family.

Adopt Karma HERE

CUBBY (and Bizzy!)

Cubby is unbelievably friendly. Her favorite spot is sitting on top of the filing cabinet where she can look out the window and watch the birds outside. She’s great with strangers and doesn’t hesitate to give them a snuggle and a head butt to say hello to them. Big kitty Cubby would like to be adopted with her big kitty sister Bizzy. Together they form a superhero team of double big kitty snuggles! Both Cubby and Bizzy are great with dogs as well.

Van City Kitty: Meet Azlan the Brave!

October 24, 2012

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Azlan as submitted by VIA reader : Deej!

Name: Azlan
…
Breed/Colouring:  Asian Longhair with stylish sandy brown furs
…
Hood: New Westminster
…

Habits:  Purring very loudly and being picky with his food

Hangouts: His scratching post, his human mum’s bed and on mum’s side when she’s watching TV

Favorite Things: Chin scratches and catnip! Azlan also loves that he is only kitty in a home with lots of love – all the more for him!

Other Info:  Before coming to his new home, Azlan had lost an eye due to a serious infection. He also has a hyperactive thyroid gland which he takes pills for, but he hates taking them! His mum is trying to raise money to have Azlan cured as it costs $2000 but it will be worth it not having cuddle time being interrupted by pills.

Azlan was found through Homefinders Animal Rescue.

Van City Kitty: Meet Vesper!

October 17, 2012

Hey there! Kitty families! Send me your cats! I am looking for kitty photos and details on kitties from all over Metro Vancouver. Put them in my inbox, get them on VIA, then brag to your friends and show them how you love your cats cats more than they love their cats: vancitykitty@vancouverisawesome.com

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Vesper as submitted by VIA reader :  Grey Alexander!

Name: Vesper aka:Doodles, Doodoo, Dude, Duder, Veepers
…
Breed/Colouring:  Black. Black as her person’s black black soul. With single white hairs on her head and chest..…..
Hood: Fairview
…

Habits: Greeting Grey at the door when he gets home from work (Once in a while peeking out the window before he’s even in the building). Unique to most cats, she enjoys being held on her back with her feet up in the air; she purrs so loud it sounds like grunting. When hungry she will meow with a rather insistent “NOW!” repeatedly. She’s pretty active at night, and wakes Grey up at 4am every night for food. And finally, she loves giving face kisses.

Hangouts:  The window sill observing the alleyway, patches of sunlight on the floor, any small cramped space, her tent, her bed, Grey’s bed, his laptop.
…

Favorite Things:  Food, first and foremost. Her feather toy. Her mouse toy. Socks, feet, and shoes laces. Treats.

Other Info: She is extremely docile when in a snuggly mood, she goes all floppy and will let you hold her however you’d like, including suspended by her waist dangling upside down. Once while Grey was feeding her treats she got the bag away from him and began biting tiny pin-sized holes in it. As he attempted to wrestle it back from her she thought she had a hold of one of the treats. What she actually had was the tip of Grey’s right index finger. She bit down so hard that his fingernail was noticeably disfigured for nearly 3 months.  While she hasn’t begun to dabble in the arts herself, yet… she is a keen observer of the creation process.
…

Hey there, whatcha doin?:

Van City Kitty: Meet “Pusskin-Wooskinpuss” Heineken!

October 10, 2012

Here are the deets on Heineken as submitted by VIA reader : Lilian Taylor!

Name: Heineken. Also answers to (among other things) Min, MinMins, Muppetmoo, Heinemittens, SausageDog, KittenCat, Poopsiecat, Salami, Pusskin-Wooskinpuss…
…
Breed/Colouring:  Heineken is a classic tabby, sort of a mixture of black and various sandy colours, with glorious swirly markings.  His whiskers have changed from their original black to a bright sparkling white as he has matured from the young man-about-town cat that he used to be into the very distinguished gentleman-cat that he is now.
…
Hood: North Vancouver
…

Habits:  He is a meeter and greeter with many approaches; sometimes he’ll come right up and weave around your ankles in an attempt to make you wobble (maybe because it’s funny to watch you try to not fall over.) Other times he’s more laid back and stays put in whichever comfy location he’s chosen for the moment and just meows his greeting and instructions on how you are to proceed. Sometimes he’s a bit more wary or contrary and will meow a hello, then wander off out of arms reach. This is also his favourite way to tease enthusiastic would-be petters and strokers when he simply isn’t in the mood to be petted or stroked.
…

Hangouts:  The balcony is a great place to hang out. Heineken is a very smart kitty who knows the secret passage to the patio that none of the other kitties can use so sometimes you’ll find him snoozing in one of the patio chairs or on top of storage box. If visitors come he will often jump up on the wall to check them out and say hello. Another favourite place is just the other side of the gate where there’s a great snoozing spot and where he can keep an eye on the neighbourhood goings on. Winter time favourite hangouts include the wicker basket, any of the big comfy fluffy perches on the magnificent West Coast Posts cat tree, on the bed right up against the pillows, or nuzzling and wrapping himself around his person’s neck.

Favorite Things: Chicken, salmon, beef, or tuna juice on his food.  Heineken’s all time favourite thing to do ever is to chase and play with his very own personal piece of string (this can only be done with someone else joining in of course, because string is far too easy for him to chew and swallow if left unsupervised.)  Heineken prefers not to share his string toy with any other kitty. At all. Ever.

Other Info: Heineken was adopted from the West Vancouver SPCA about 10 years ago when he was quite a small kitty.  His name back then was Pilot, but since he’s really my daughter’s cat, she renamed him Heineken because she just happened to like the sound of it – and so did he.
His adopted older brother Frank “Frankie the Lovable Doofus” passed away just over 3 years ago and Heineken missed him so much. Luckily, he now has two adopted sisters, Bella and Francesca, and a new younger but much, much bigger brother, Forrest (previously profiled here.) All of them were adopted from VOKRA within the last 2 years, and Heineken is once again a very happy and contented kitty.
…

He looks like I looked in Amsterdam after a night of his namesake beverages:

I’m not entirely convinced this kitty is ever awake to greet anyone:

Van City Kitty: Meet Ruby Soho!

October 3, 2012

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Ruby Soho as submitted by VIA reader : Emma!

Name: Ruby Soho aka: Princess Kitty McGoo, The Mitty
…
Breed/Colouring: Balinese (A fluffy Siamese)
…
Hood: Commercial Drive
…

Habits:  Drinking from the tap (and out of the toilet if she gets the chance), playing with her NOISIEST toys when everybody is trying to sleep, and scooting her food bowl to different places around the house. She also enjoys claiming Emma’s hubby’s pillow after he leaves for work and sleeping with her nose touching Emma’s. She has a bad habit of sleeping on her work-at-home Mum’s, desk (and on top of her work!)
…
..…..…
Hangouts: Under the duvet, on top of the fridge, on keyboards, on remotes, on phones, and on people’s hands.
…

Favorite Things: Kitty toys with jingly bells inside them, going for walks in the garden/patio on her sparkly pink lead, stealing stuffed animals from the human son’s bedroom to snuggle when he is at school.

Other Info: Ruby Soho came to us from the lovely folks at Homefinders Animal Rescue Society all the way from Smithers BC!  My son had spent his entire life wishing he could adopt a sad kitty from a shelter and shower it with love, but due to horrendous allergies hadn’t been able to.  Turns out Balinese cats don’t produce the protein in their saliva that causes the sneezies- who knew?!  So Ruby is the magical hypo-allergenic kitty has made my little guy’s dream come true.

Van City Kitty: Take Us Home Edition! Meet Tyson, Marlowe, and Anna!

September 26, 2012

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Every month we feature a few kitties who are looking for their forever home. Here are this month’s lovely felines from Katie’s Place!

Katie’s Place is a volunteer-run no-kill animal shelter in Maple Ridge. Two principals guide them: all life is valuable, and we are responsible for improving the quality of life for all those in our care. They make no judgment on whose life is worth rescuing; the sick, elderly and homely are as precious as the healthy, young and attractive.

Katie’s Place started helping animals in January of 2001 and became a registered charity in 2005. Katie’s Place funding comes entirely from donations, fundraising and applying for grants. The funds go directly to animal care. Less than 3% is spent on admin/maintenance (eg. phone, bank charges, insurance). They are entirely volunteer run.

Learn more about Katie’s Place here

TYSON

When Tyson initially came to Katie`s Place he was unsure and somewhat wary of his surroundings. Now that he is out and about in his communal room he is showing that he is a sweet guy who enjoys attention and chin scratches. If you are the type of person who is attracted to Scottish Folds or other cats with interesting and unusual ear-shapes, you may find you have a special liking for Tyson. He`s the type of cat we refer to as a ‘Shelter Fold’ because of past ear hematoma. He’s healthy and has an adorable quirky look.

Adopt Tyson HERE

MARLOWE

Marlowe is a beautiful boy who probably spent the entire two years of his life in the same home with the same people until he became a stray and wound up in a shelter. With time and patience, Marlowe has come to see that shelter volunteers are not as scary as he once thought and will allow them to pet him much more than he used to. Marlowe will still give little warning growls if he feels they’re paying too much attention to him, though this is happening less and less. Katie’s place is sure when Marlowe is back in a home and out of this extremely stressful environment he’ll be a happy, calm, loving boy once more. Because Marlowe can get overwhelmed, he should not go to a home with small children or dogs, but other cats would be okay.

Adopt Marlowe HERE

ANNA

Anna is a statuesque torti who was adopted from another shelter and was then discovered to be diabetic. The elderly owner was unable to deal with diabetes, the other shelter couldn’t take her back, therefore Anna came to Katie’s Place. Anna is a friendly, sociable girl – come and see if she’s the one who will steal your heart!
