The GDC Does Aaron Draplin

May 14, 2012

On May 3rd, the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) hosted Aaron Draplin for “Tall Tales from a Large Man” at Ironworks in Railtown. It was an experience to see this kind of Rock n’ Roll legend of graphic design speak about his passion in person. Excitement was palpable in the air as people packed in at dusk: The place was dripping with local design hounds and dignitaries. The drama of the Ironworks venue added nicely to the overall buzz of anticipation as Draplin tweaked last minute details, allowing plenty of time for mingling, networking, beer and limited edition posters purchasing.

Dogtown Vancouver: Pup-a-razzi Day!

May 13, 2012

BC SPCA partners with local photographers for “Pup-a-razzi Day”

Adoptable animals strike a pose and hope for a home! The BC SPCA is working with local photographers across the province to show adoptable animals in the best light for the “Pup-a-razzi Day” campaign on May 16th, showcasing the hundreds of wonderful animals looking for homes.

“We know that when shelter animals are photographed outside the kennel/cage environment, people can visualize them as pets more easily and adoption rates increase,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA.

Led by Vancouver photographer Ashleigh Wells, professional photographers are volunteering their time in participating branches to help visually combat the myth that shelter animals are not as desirable as pets.

“Photographing animals in a natural environment outside of the kennel helps to show how beautiful and lovable they really are.” says photographer Ashleigh Wells. “There is a misconception about shelter animals and hopefully our photos will challenge people’s thinking when it comes to adoption.”

Pup-a-razzi Day will be taking place at select shelters across BC including Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Prince George and Campbell River.

MEDIA ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND!

WHERE: Upstairs Boardroom, Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue.

WHEN: Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 between 11a.m – 1p.m.

FOR MORE INFO: Lorie Chortyk, general manager, community relations, BC SPCA, 604-647-1316; Rachel Thexton, Dunn PR, 604-729-1448.

Pup-a-razzi Day is a part of The BC SPCA’s May Adoption Awareness Month. The BC SPCA cares for more than 32,000 animals a year and operates adoption centres in 35 communities across the province where all animals adopted have health checks, vaccinations, temperament testing and are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Random Act of Awesomeness: Hannah Epperson launches “Church”

May 10, 2012

Cool! Vancouver violinist, Hannah Epperson, has launched a new performance series out of the church where her father is a minister (Unitarian Church of Vancouver at Oak + 49th Ave), with the intention of not only providing a venue for artists but also to make sure that they get paid for performing! Watch the video below for all the info. This is really fantastic.

SIDE NOTE: I made sure to ask if there’s anything “churchy” about the events, as I am averse to showing up to something and having someone else’s views pushed on me. I’ve been assured that the only thing churchy about these events are that they’re held in a church (duh) and the series is called Church (duh, again). It’s all about supporting the artists, which is what makes this particularly awesome.

The next Church happens tomorrow night. All the info can be found HERE.
