Van City Kitty: Take Us Home Edition! Meet Collette, Ash and Aurora!

January 30, 2013

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Every month we feature a few kitties who are looking for their forever home. Today we have three adoptable felines from VOKRA!

Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association (VOKRA) is a no-kill, non-profit, registered charity dedicated to the rescue of cats in the Lower Mainland. They also coordinate rescue work with other groups in BC.
VOKRA does not have a shelter. Instead, they provide individual foster homes throughout the Lower Mainland. In this way VOKRA is able to protect the very young from colds, distemper, parasites and other transmissible illnesses.Placed in foster home environments, cats are safe and well socialized, with lots of love and attention.Learn more about VOKRA here

In 2012 VOKRA rescued over 1700 cats and kittens!

VOKRA still has adorable 2013 calendars available! Click here…

COLLETTE

Collette is a sweet, well-adjusted kitten who loves people and other cats, and is always happy to be cuddled. She loves to play, and watching her eager little face and very expressive tail as she chases her toys or explores a new space is guaranteed to make you smile. Collette is litter trained, likes her scratch post, often comes when called by name, and is happy to be picked up and held. She’s also very smart and learns house rules quickly. She is laid back and would likely adapt well to most situations, including living with another cat or cat-friendly dog.

ADOPT COLLETTE HERE!

ASH AND AURORA

Ash and Aurora were rescued from the streets and arrived at their foster family’s place as wild and feral. After a few weeks in the calm presence of their foster, they have really turned into a sweet and playful pair of house cats. Ash almost desperately enjoys being petted and doesn’t mind being held tight. She really likes attention, however she is still wary of quick movements. Her sister, Aurora, is a bit more wary, purrs when petted and really enjoys play. They can make someone a very happy home because they will become more trusting and very attached to their owner over time. Often the most skittish cats become the most loving when their trust is earned. They belong in a peaceful and quiet home, preferably without dogs or children. Ash and Aurora need to be adopted together.

Recognize Aurora? She is also in the 2013 VOKRA calendar!

Van City Kitty: Meet Harriet!

December 12, 2012

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Harriet, submitted by VIA reader : Jeremy Hood!

Names: Harriet
…
Breed/Colouring: Short black furs
…
Hood: Grandview near Commercial Drive
…

Habits: Kneading and being needy in the early hours of the morning when her person is trying to sleep, getting a little too excited for her own good and bothering the older cat to play (who usually does not want to play.)

Hangouts: She can be found on one of the many cat-exclusive blankets found around the house, sometimes sleeping/cuddling beside the older cat. When the person is on the computer she hangs out on the mouse pad next to the computer. She loves the window sills that have great views of the North Shore mountains and downtown Vancouver and she absolutely adores watching the water getting used in the bathroom sink.

Favorite Things: Harriet loves playing IN water, so her water dish is always thick with fur and half full from being spilled by her. She also has an incredible appetite for food, especially the raw food that she gets fed. Harriet loves anything she can bat around the house for hours; even the simplest of things like a crumpled up piece of paper.

Other Info: Harriet was the smallest of her litter and her eyes were originally blue but are now yellow. She is a very sweet gal who has an endless supply of energy and affection to give either humans or the other cat in the house she shares with. She also has some very faint tabby stripes that are only visible in certain light.!

Harriet was born under VOKRA‘s care.  Her mother was found homeless and pregnant outdoors, was lucky enough to be rescued, and had her kittens in health and safety.

Just try to resist those big kitty eyes:

Van City Kitty: Meet Lazuli &Pandora!

November 14, 2012

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Lazuli and Pandora as submitted by VIA reader : Andrea Polonijo!

Names: Lazuli and Pandora
…
Breed/Colouring: Lazuli is a head turner with long luxurious white and grey tabby fur. Pandora is always dressed to impress in her trim black and white tuxedo.
…
Hood: Main Street
…

Habits: Lazuli is a hipster-in-training, evidenced by the fact that she loves curling up on mom’s chambray shirt and listen to her Beach House album.  She’s a close-talker; she gets right up to your face to purr and lick you while digging her tiny paws into your neck! Pandora is adorably lanky and can often be found in the classic “spooky cat” position – back arched and tail up! She has amazing ball dribbling skills and hopes to play on the Canadian Women’s Soccer Team one day.

Hangouts: If mom’s cooking, they are right by her feet, licking their lips and hoping that she will drop some crumbs. If mom’s trying to work, they love to sit on her lap, laptop, or papers – whichever is most inconvenient! When it’s sunny they can be found sprawled out on the windowsill.  In any case, they are always together; they are inseparable.

Favorite Things: Hunting mom’s toes while she’s asleep, chirping like squirrels while chasing each other in circles around the apartment, and snuggling!

Other Info: At eight weeks old, these sisters were found after having been dumped (by a very bad person) on the streets of Smithers, BC. They were rescued by the good people at the North West Animal Shelter and flown to Vancouver where they were fostered by VOKRA.  When they were four months old they successfully wooed their adoptive mom’s heart with their charm and good looks, and are now living it up in Vancouver’s East Side!

Cats of Instagram Superstars:

Even cats know: Kitty bellies make the softest pillows.

Van City Kitty: Take Us Home this Halloween! Black Cat Edition.

October 31, 2012

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Every month we feature a few kitties who are looking for their forever home. This month we have a special Halloween Edition of some very sweet black kitties from VOKRA and Katie’s Place!

Happy Halloween!

It’s hard to believe by looking at the four beautiful cats below, but black cats have a drastically lower adoption rate than other coloured cats. Sadly, in shelters across Canada and all over the world this often means a high rate of euthanization; black cats are only unlucky if you happen to be one.

Whether because of outdated superstitions, or just the reality that they are much more difficult to photograph well, black cats are especially in need of loving homes and people or families to bond with.

If you are looking for a new addition to your family or a furry  companion who loves you just the way you are, consider one of these kitties, or one of many more in Vancouver shelters.

Both Katie’s Place and VOKRA are strictly no-kill shelters that are entirely volunteer run.

JULIETTE

Juliette seeks Romeo, but will gladly settle for anyone willing to provide a loving home. Juliette is a loving, trusting cat who was left behind by her family a couple of years ago. A neighbour had been feeding her, letting her in, and she had been sleeping on the bed, but they could no longer care for her and took her to a shelter. Her original family had been traced but didn’t want her back.

Juliette loves people, and misses having a person to call her own.  She must wonder why her family abandoned her and she found herself in shelter after shelter. Often, there aren’t enough loving moments to go around in the shelter, and so she awaits someone to love her as their very own.

Adopt Juliette HERE

HAMMOND

Hammond is a black guy with a beautiful chocolate ruff and highlights. He was trapped as a shy and scared stray so he’s a little scruffy right now, but he is friendly, attentive, and welcomes attention and petting. He may just steal your heart this Halloween after a few treats.

Adopt Hammond HERE

KARMA

Karma is a 5-month-old kitten who is all sweetness and spirit. She enjoys chasing everything from a rubber ball to a lazer pen to one of her siblings. She likes children and is fearless around other pets so would do very well in a family situation. Karma and one of her siblings would be a happy, delightful addition to a busy, loving family.

Adopt Karma HERE

CUBBY (and Bizzy!)

Cubby is unbelievably friendly. Her favorite spot is sitting on top of the filing cabinet where she can look out the window and watch the birds outside. She’s great with strangers and doesn’t hesitate to give them a snuggle and a head butt to say hello to them. Big kitty Cubby would like to be adopted with her big kitty sister Bizzy. Together they form a superhero team of double big kitty snuggles! Both Cubby and Bizzy are great with dogs as well.

Van City Kitty: Meet “Pusskin-Wooskinpuss” Heineken!

October 10, 2012

Hey there!  Kitty families!  Send me your cats!  I am looking for kitty photos and details on kitties from all over Metro Vancouver. Put them in my inbox, get them on VIA, then brag to your friends and show them how you love your cats cats more than they love their cats: vancitykitty@vancouverisawesome.com

A new kitty once a week! Click here to find out how your cat can appear on Van City Kitty.

Here are the deets on Heineken as submitted by VIA reader : Lilian Taylor!

Name: Heineken. Also answers to (among other things) Min, MinMins, Muppetmoo, Heinemittens, SausageDog, KittenCat, Poopsiecat, Salami, Pusskin-Wooskinpuss…
…
Breed/Colouring:  Heineken is a classic tabby, sort of a mixture of black and various sandy colours, with glorious swirly markings.  His whiskers have changed from their original black to a bright sparkling white as he has matured from the young man-about-town cat that he used to be into the very distinguished gentleman-cat that he is now.
…
Hood: North Vancouver
…

Habits:  He is a meeter and greeter with many approaches; sometimes he’ll come right up and weave around your ankles in an attempt to make you wobble (maybe because it’s funny to watch you try to not fall over.) Other times he’s more laid back and stays put in whichever comfy location he’s chosen for the moment and just meows his greeting and instructions on how you are to proceed. Sometimes he’s a bit more wary or contrary and will meow a hello, then wander off out of arms reach. This is also his favourite way to tease enthusiastic would-be petters and strokers when he simply isn’t in the mood to be petted or stroked.
…

Hangouts:  The balcony is a great place to hang out. Heineken is a very smart kitty who knows the secret passage to the patio that none of the other kitties can use so sometimes you’ll find him snoozing in one of the patio chairs or on top of storage box. If visitors come he will often jump up on the wall to check them out and say hello. Another favourite place is just the other side of the gate where there’s a great snoozing spot and where he can keep an eye on the neighbourhood goings on. Winter time favourite hangouts include the wicker basket, any of the big comfy fluffy perches on the magnificent West Coast Posts cat tree, on the bed right up against the pillows, or nuzzling and wrapping himself around his person’s neck.

Favorite Things: Chicken, salmon, beef, or tuna juice on his food.  Heineken’s all time favourite thing to do ever is to chase and play with his very own personal piece of string (this can only be done with someone else joining in of course, because string is far too easy for him to chew and swallow if left unsupervised.)  Heineken prefers not to share his string toy with any other kitty. At all. Ever.

Other Info: Heineken was adopted from the West Vancouver SPCA about 10 years ago when he was quite a small kitty.  His name back then was Pilot, but since he’s really my daughter’s cat, she renamed him Heineken because she just happened to like the sound of it – and so did he.
His adopted older brother Frank “Frankie the Lovable Doofus” passed away just over 3 years ago and Heineken missed him so much. Luckily, he now has two adopted sisters, Bella and Francesca, and a new younger but much, much bigger brother, Forrest (previously profiled here.) All of them were adopted from VOKRA within the last 2 years, and Heineken is once again a very happy and contented kitty.
…

He looks like I looked in Amsterdam after a night of his namesake beverages:

I’m not entirely convinced this kitty is ever awake to greet anyone:
