Play On 2011 is back again this year June 11th and 12th, once again at the lower mainland’s largest parking lot, Metrotown!  Team VIA will be avenging our loss of last year trying to recapture the coed division title.  Throughout the next week I’ll be introducing you to the VIA team and providing updates during the tournament.

Today I bring you Tim Stump!

Tim’s a cool cat.  You have to be a bit crazy to play in net, so VIA is terribly lucky to a goalie like Tim who quietly stops everything.  No masks thrown….no crossbars broken.  Tim, like Simon comes with the support of his better half, Tara, who made up a big part of the team VIA cheering section.

There’s only a few days left to sign up, so make sure you don’t miss out.  There’s a division for everyone, whether you played junior or never left the cul-de-sac.  This could be the only thing that can cure your hockey fever!

Simon’s a ball hockey fanatic, there isn’t a game in town he hasn’t played.  He also runs the ball hockey league at EA.  On the court, Simon is Mighty Mouse, when he gets the ball, he’s gone, and just when you wonder where the heck he’s going with it, he cuts to the net and scores.  Simon also comes in tandem with his main squeeze Angela, who’s shot all the great hockey photos in years past, and designed this year’s hockey card!  She’s a huge part of the team VIA!

So…are you signing up?  Make sure you get your team in by June 8th!

Today I bring you…..Me!

Yes….me!  If I can quote my grandfather, the best way to describe my game play is ‘Run around like chicken….wif no head!’  I’m also known for hammering slapshots in practice even though raising your stick above your waist is disallowed in our division.  Grandpa was onto something…..

With hockey fever at an all time high this year in Vancouver, Hockey Night in Canada’s annual ball hockey tournament  will be better than ever.  It will be held again this year at Metrotown on June 11th and 12th, registration must be in by June  8th, for more info check their website.  There are categories for everyone, and with street hockey being a game that at some point in your life, everyone has played, it’s Canada’s largest sports festival.  If you’re thinking of entering, just do it, it’s so much fun.

VIA’s team will be avenging our quarter final shoot out loss of last year in the coed division.  We’re back this year, and even hungrier.  Look forward for more posts profiling our players and coverage of the tournament.

Every once in awhile I troll over to our friends at the Canadian Design Resource web site to find a gem that is relevant to this city of ours. It’s one of those days!

Below is the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, purchased by Lord Stanley and meant to “celebrate and mark the early championship teams in Canadian hockey”. Click HERE to see the post on the CDR, and bookmark that site because there is always something now and awesome going up.

Remember this photo Gary featured back in January?  In his post Gary mentioned some of the great uses of the milk crates, but it still left us wondering why was it there?  Was it all that was left of an abandoned record collection?  A publicly funded piece of art?  Was it the milk man?

I do frequent many of Vancouver’s beaches, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on which one this was.  With the milk crate being there though, the first place that popped into my mind was the hockey court at Sunset Beach.

This spot is like the Rucker Park of Vancouver, on any given day you can find a very heated game of inline hockey being played here. (note took the photo at 9am)  Erynn who will again be playing for VIA in this year’s Play On tournament, plays here regularly.  She told me there are a few players that have been playing at this spot for decades.  So…could this be an answer to another  ‘Dumb Hockey Question’?

Also, sharpen up your superblades, this is just the first of many posts I’ll be making leading up and during this years Play On tournament!

Did you know that Stanley Park is named after the same dude that they named the NHL’s Stanley Cup after? Yep. Lord Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby. I’m kinda surprised nobody’s made a homemade Cup and hoisted it into his arms yet…
